Who are these people to be getting handouts? Seems like the taxpayer owns most/all of what they have so what exactly are these one time handouts going to be paying for? What could they have lost that isn't already provided for?

If its for food or clothing, why only low income people considered? Anyone could have lost in the hurricane. Seems like the government is supplying homeowners and/or flood insurance here and last time I checked, they didn't have that authority.

Of course the government has that authority. In practice, the government isn't anything more than a giant insurance company anyway. They already have the unquestioned authority to provide national retirement and health insurance (social security and medicare), but you think that disaster insurance would somehow not qualify?

Are you about to go off with some other novel ideas about what the Constitution says? I think you still have a few other irons in the fire when it comes to that.

From my experience after a hurricane, most of those handouts are for people who live hand-to-mouth. If they miss a couple of days of work, they will not be able to pay their electric bill, water bill, car note,,,,,.

After hurricane katrina, fema was handing out some kind of debit card with something like $1,200 or $1,500 on it. People were "supposed" to use the money to get back on their feet. Keep in mind the people who got the card were low income families.

After hurricane Rita just 1 month later, almost nobody was able to get the card, because we made too much money.

I agree with what you said about social security and medicare but where does the government have the authority to reimburse for personal property. I only assume that is what this handout is for since its dealing with disaster relief and current food stamp recipients aren't eligible, supposedly. I don't remember seeing a vote for this authority and I don't believe it is covered under the two programs listed. If FEMA was conducting this then maybe I could see it but then it also wouldn't be restricted to "low income" if it was called disaster relief.

Typical ATer would have no clue what it is like to live "hand-to-mouth".

From the article, "...Many of those in line, including Taushania Valle, were regular food stamp recipients. Valle, a waitress who recently moved to Manchester, said she was away from her Hartford apartment during the tropical storm, and had left her windows open. Carpets and clothing were damaged and the food in her refrigerator spoiled after her building lost power...."

I'm sorry, but why should our tax dollars be handed out to cover losses that happened because you were a dumbass!!?

Kinda like the people in new orleans that live below sea level, were told to evacuate, but decided to stay?

One of the problems with our government, instead of being made responsible for their actions, stupid people are rewarded.

When I was helping out at a shelter for hurricane Katrina evacuees, one lady walks in, and the first words out of her mouth is how does she sign up for public housing and food stamps. The lady was receiving public housing and food stamps in new orleans, and wanted to sign up for whatever benefits she could in Texas.

A family my wife and I know, they have been receiving food stamps for close to 20 years. The couple just keeps having babies they can not afford.

in america, we take from the middle class and give to the poor!

Always help for Bangladesh,Hati, Samali and Ethiopia, but we're too stubborn to allow ourselves
be helping ourselves?
Congress is also a deatbeat - they've already allocated the spending bill, it was passed and enacted,
now that it's in the books, they want to stiff the payments.
You want to have it one way - Corporate welfare and tax cuts to the BIG CONTRIBUTORS.

You even will lie to say that lower taxes create jobs, but the COMPANY gets the tax cuts, the CEO
doesn't pull cash out of his own pocket and say 'How high and what color' the CORPORATION gets the actual break, disproportionally as well.

Back to the 'Wealthy Owner' - he already gets special perks and breaks that others don't, and the
Corporation takes the risk and he just grabs as much as he can.
Doesn't have to know what he's effecting long term, just make something happen, good or bad . . dosen't care.

we should never reward stupidity or mediocrity. those were just some of the first steps in digging our own grave.
