HUNGRY for something other than Bush, Kerry, Iraq, or 911?

GOOD Carbs do the body good
In the Northwestern study, more than 4,000 people from the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and China wrote in a food diary everything they had eaten during two 24-hour periods. "Lo and behold, what we did find is that without exception, a high complex-carbohydrate, high-fiber, high vegetable-protein diet was associated with low body mass index Van Horn explained. A low body mass index or BMI is a standard measure of healthy weight.

But also notable is this finding: The more animal protein that was consumed, the higher the person's weight. And the greater risk to his or her health. "I think any diet that recommends increasing the amount of saturated fat poses a risk," said Randal J. Thomas of the Mayo Clinic. "There may be good things about the diet...but any diet that recommends increases in saturated fat could be increasing the risk in the population."

GOOD LORD, YES!

I recently went on a diet cuz my pants would no longer fit and I'm too cheap to buy more. Basically, I switched to diet softdrinks (instead of regular), cut down on fats, and took protein supplements (milkshake, low fat high protein kind you can get at GNC pretty cheap). Also eat alot of high carb food cuz it's good for energy (I'm talking mostly rice here).

I went from about a 37 inch waist to 33 inches pretty quick.

My wife did the Atkins thing, it helped her. But I just can't agree with the philosiphy, eat fat to lose fat. Plus, it seems like w/o carbs (I think it's the complex carbs that ur body can efficiently convert to energy, as opposed to sugar-type which wants to go first to body fat) you won't have much energy. Who want's to feel like crap all day long?

Anyway, anything but more partisan wrangling over 911 suits me.

Cheers

<--Not a big fan of Atkins.

But Atkins laid the groundwork of some good fundamental theories, namely that low-fat, high processed carb diet generally is what is fattening up our country.

Walk into any grocery store, and look at what the majority of the floorspace is dedicated to. Cereal has it's own entire aisle. Pop has another aisle. Snacks have another. Candy has yet another. Then we hit canned foods and frozen foods. Fresh produce, fresh meat? Probably 20% or less of the floorspace. But it should be 100% of your diet...

Although I haven't looked at it much, I've heard that the south beach diet is a refined atkins that is better (i.e. considers whole complex carbs, salmon is better than bacon, etc.). But my preference is just eating whole foods in balanced quantities, controlled portions, and exercise. Simple enough.

Whole foods?!?! Hippie! ;)

I'll admit I've tried the effeminate Special K diet to moderate success, but I agree that nothing beats a diet of whole foods.

Fruits for breakfast, desserts, and snacks.
Lean meat or fish along with colorful veggies (not just potatoes) for lunch and dinner.

You'd be suprised how much of a hippie I am when it comes to certain things, such as the environment, healthcare/diet, legalizing drugs. I would have voted Dean before Kerry :)

Any diet that burns more calories than consumed works, but the point is to fundamentally change your lifestyle so that your weight isn't a yo-yo. I don't care how old I live, as long as the old years are good years :)
