From SD; but these books are so bloody good thought they deserved a posting here. Not sure how long the deal last.

I've never bought books from the google store before. Are they in a format that can be downloaded and used on other readers?

No. And neither are the Kindle store books.

Well, as I understand the Kindle books you can download them but they're still DRM protected. I didn't know if google even let you download them in the first place regardless of DRM.

Semi-related, is the hunger games trilogy part of the books you get for free if you're an Amazon Prime member? I don't have a Kindle so haven't been able to check, but I remember at least the first book was free for Prime members at some point.

Your question was whether they could be downloaded and used on another reader. That is not true for Kindle, Nook, or Play Books.

You can use Calibre to convert the ebook format to epub.

You can't do that without breaking the DRM, and you can't do that without breaking the law, which is why I asked if the Play Store books were DRM protected too and now I have my answer.

Also I answered my own question from earlier. All 3 books are free on Amazon Prime's lending library.

Picked up the Trilogy, thanks. I've read them all from the lending library before, but I don't mind owning them for $5.

I believe both google and amazon allow you to read books via the browser (I tested amazon with some library book i had checked out and it works fine). However, they do have drm and do not allow you to use your favorite readers.

I also did a quick search for opinion between kindle and google; and uniformly on android forums kindle was the prefer media with various complaints about google books (i limited my search for late 2012/earlier 2013). Anyways if you are curious to the specifics you can do a similar search. I've been reading library books with kindle for a while on my andrioid tablet and have no real complaints; and when I tried the google reader with the google free aniversity book it was ok but there were nuisances that made me prefer the kindle reader (but some of that might be due to familiarity). Anyways amazon customer support is great and google has more cash (longevity) so take your pick.

If you are a Amazon Prime member and have a Kindle, you can get all three for free via Kindle Lending.
