Well, I couldn't find it. I thought something so important would be on top of the page somewhere.

Funny though what the article did not mention is that those arrested already had INS violations such as overstaying their welcome or failing to reside where they said they would reside. I don't know that all of them had INS violations, but many did.

Too bad, if you don't follow the rules and comply with the terms of your stay, we can and should be ready and willing to deport your ass, pronto. Its what we should have been doing for years instead of allowing 10 million people to be running around the countryside in violation of their terms of stay.

i believe they were iranian immigrants.

the federal government doesnt discriminate by religion...

it sticks to round-up by ethnicity; like remember that time thousands of japanese immigrants were rounded up and 'protected' in camps....

Does the USA have rules about the safety of the people when send back? Iran is, thanks to the conservative powers there, still not a safe country for a lot of moderate Muslims, so I can imagine them not wanting to go back.

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound. If these people weren't following the rules, they wouldn't have showed up at the frikken INS building to register. The guys with expired visas are sitting at home laughing at these suckers who are now sitting in jail.

from what i read there were people being detained who HAD VALID visas.

also, remember that the INS announced the mandatory registration of male citizens and nationals of certain ARAB countries by December 16 - whether on valid visa or not.
make no mistake it was a roundup of specific ethnic group.

i remember in so cal bout 5+ years back the INS had set up a sting operation contacting known illegals they they had won a prize and to collect. when they came to collect they were detained and then deported. that sucked and caused an outroar.

but what happened this time was different. a general announcement was made, making registration of both legal and illegals at the INS mandatory. an illegal would only show up at the INS under the pretense that he was doing something legit to legalize himself. i read in the paper about a young man whose friend was told by the INS that his green card was accepted and his paperworked was just backed up. he went in to register with the INS and then got locked up. thats jacked up.

would a terrorist (or even regular joe shmo ahmed) staying in the U.S. ILlegally KNOWINGLY go register himself at the INS just cause the INS asked him. heck no. it would be people who think they are here on valid visas, pending visas, pending green card and think that they've done nothing wrong. it would be people who are just trying to be good Americans, abiding by the rules best they can amid jacked up bureacratic red tape and a federal government that is becoming increasingly hostile towards arabs, muslims and civil rights in general.
i think INS locked up the wrong people. that trick the INS pulled with illegal mexican immigrants might have nabbed people who knew they were here illegally, but c'mon.... registering at the INS would only attract people who think THEY'VE done NOTHING WRONG.

this line of thought seems only logical to me..
dont you guys think?

I can't read the whole thing. Minister Ashcroft should take a bow. He will be remembered in the annals of fascist American policy.

I think it's like Nazis asking Jews to register during WW2. Maybe the INS will also give the muslims a crescent to put on their shirts.

That is what CNN is reporting.

Let's be honest an element in the US government (and an element of the US population) would like to see these people leave. It has nothing to do with their contribution to American society, their reasons for leaving their homeland, or reasons for coming to America. Our government is trying to send a message that if you are from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, et al . . . take your sanddigger butt back home. Even people from Jordan (our lonely peaceful Arab brother) are getting walking papers. Curious who I didn't mention?! I bet Saudi Arabians are still doing to two-step.

WHATF$&^$*$)# PINHEAD CAME UP WITH THAT IDEA???? HOW THE F&#$(*%$ are we going to get any useful intelligence from the Muslim community when we pull crap like this. Remember most of the intelligence we are getting regarding domestic potential terrorists is coming from the Muslim community including the Buffalo six who were turned in by members of thier own communities. If the government starts locking people up who show up to comply with a legal directive, we are going to get aboslutely no further cooperation and we might as well just put up a big sign saying "Welcome terrorists, we have just made it easier for you to hide in plain sight".

Absolutely brilliant. In one fell stroke the INS and the Justice Department just seriously hurt our domestic intelligence gathering capability.

CNN is reporting what INS is saying, but you would have to be a complete moron to believe that someone who knows that their visa has expired would show up to register with the INS. Arresting Persian immigrants is the dumbest idea I ever heard. Anyone who knows one Iranian immigrant knows that they hate the Mullahs and Islamic Revolution more than Cuban immigrants hate Castro. I talked to a Persian recently, and he said if the US attacked Iran, he would want to take part in it.

You are assuming too much SuperTool. Most people think Persians are really fluffy white cats. The tremendous variety in culture and history which marks the region is totally lost on the "you're either with us or with the turrists" crowd.

Hey they can be gorgeous animals , , , and yes I have a white Persian. Unfortunately, they are a grooming nightmare . . . nothing like cleaning diarrhea from white hair.:disgust:
