At least 161 people have been killed and scores injured by a strong earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Java, hospitals say.

The quake, measuring 6.2, flattened buildings in a densely-populated area near the city of Yogyakarta on the southern coast of the island of Java.

Witnesses said people fled as their homes collapsed around them, after the quake struck early in the morning.

Local radio said several hospitals were packed with people seeking treatment.

Electricity and communications across the city were also down, police said.

'Massive' tremor

The quake hit at 0554 local time (2253 GMT Friday), around 25km (15 miles) south of the city of Yogyakarta, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia's ancient royal capital and one of its biggest cities, is about 440km (275 miles) south-east of the capital, Jakarta.

"The earthquake was felt to be massive - larger than the locals here say they've felt in their lives," said Brook Weisman-Ross, regional disaster co-ordinator for Plan International children's charity in Java.

"I was shaken from my bed... As furniture was falling, concrete chunks started falling from my hotel room as people were running out in panic in their bedclothes," he told the BBC.

He said there was extensive damage across the city and that many of the smaller, older houses had collapsed.

A witness told the Associated Press news agency he had seen three bodies under the rubble of two houses.

The Sarjito hospital in Yogyakarta reported receiving 36 bodies, while another outside the city said it had 10.

Indonesia is in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Near Yogyakarta is the volcano Mount Merapi, which threatened to erupt earlier this month, forcing thousands of people to be evacuated.

In December 2004, a huge earthquake off Indonesia's coast killed hundreds of thousands of people by triggering a tsunami.

Earthquakes, volcanoes, bird flu.... remind me not to buy a timeshare in Java...

ETA: As this gets worse, I truly feel for the people of the region, and don't mean to make light of the disaster in my post above...

Last I heard, the death toll was put 2700 and is likely to rise. But a 6.2 magnitude quake is not all that large.
But when you live near a subduction zone, earthquakes can be fairly common. Nor do I read any wrath of god stuff into any of this. As the entire Western coast of the US also lies near a subduction zone---maybe not as active as in Java---but its still a matter of fact that the Western coast of the US could be hit by a quake much more powerful than this one---at any time.

The only certainty is---the longer the quake takes to finally hit, the more powerful the quake will likely be.

As I recall, the San Fransico quake in 1906 was about a magnitude 8---almost 100 times more powerful than a 6.2---I think the new Madrid quakes around St Louis came in at an estimated 9 or so.

But quite a few year ago the Japs became somewhat arrogant--they thought their building codes and earthquake prediction were protecting them quite well--then the Kyota quake hit without warning and just flattened the city.

We arrogant humans may run around on the surface quite sure of ourselves. But every once in a awhile Ma Nature reminds us who is really calling the tune.

They're saying 2,900 deaths now. Hope this doesn't keep spinning upwards like the Tsunami death count.

Latest number is 3,000, according to the wall street journal. The volcano is increasing activity as well.
