Humongous icons on Taskbar + Quicklaunch

I've reformatted plenty of times before, and seen my share of problems by the wonderful world of Windows XP, but this one takes the cake for "not dire urgent but annoying." So I have these icons on my taskbar and quicklaunch, and they look massively huge. They also look very pixelated, like the rest of my system is at 1280x1024 but these icons are still living in the 800x600 world or something. I uninstalled my disdplay drivers (nvidia) and reinstalled along with my monitor drivers. I also tried to use 800x600 then reset the resolution back to 1280x1024. It's something I can live with if there really is no solution. But if there is, I'd like to know because those icons can drive any sane person crazy after a while I tell ya!

Besides the above attempted solutions, I tried to right click quicklaunch and in view, it's already in small icons. The right click in properties of taskbar (the large/smal icons) have to deal with the icons in start menu (I tried both just for kicks) and nothing worked. Please, does anybody know any suggestion or solution?

Are your icons on the desktop normal sized? If not, might want to check Display Properties-->Appearance-->[Advanced]

There will be a drop-down box with icon size in it. If that is not the problem, you might try installing one of those UI tweaking programs and messing with it that way.

Thank you for the reply Captain Howdy. Yes, the icons on Desktop are normal sized. I've tried messing with the icon size and the only icon that changes are the ones on Desktop (as it should). I don't particularly recall anything in there that relates to my problem, but I will try the UI Tweaking program nonetheless. If there's any other suggestions, don't be shy!

Try just dragging the taskbar down so just the top edge appears on the desktop. Then, pull it back up. See if the icons change size with the drag.

I've seen on other computers, like 17" monitors with 1280x1024 resolutions, they somehow set the icons to be quite large, both on the desktop & the taskbar. I'd bet there is an option somewhere that defines this.

Thanks for the suggestion Slikkster. Just tried the dragging taskbar down, and pulled it back up. Nothing. I also tweaked UI Tweak as much as tweakable and still no solution! I wouldn't mind this as much if it weren't for the fact that all my monitoring programs (MBM5, ATI Tool, and FreeRAM XP) all have out-of-proportion numbers (not to mention the pixelated numbers). ATI Tool doesn't seem to be affected for some reason. But MBM5 and FreeRAM XP are almost impossible to read their numbers when minimized on taskbar.

Try this from Kelly's Korner:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

The full version of the program costs $5.00, but the feature you need fixed (taskbar icon size) is listed as working in the shareware/free version. Or, you could just download and run the script file for that function alone: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/taskbaricons.vbs and see if that fixes your issue.

You can also try to change your "Theme" in display properties to reset the icon size. Whatever its currently set at, change it to something else. Change it to Windows XP Modified, Windows Classic or Windows XP...whatever its currently NOT set at. See if the icons revert to default sizes. Then, switch back to whatever your desired theme is.

Doh! I meant to say system tray, not taskbar. The taskbar is fine, it is the icons in system tray and quicklaunch that is giving me hell. Kelly's Korner fixes the tasks in taskbar, but it doesn't do anything for the icons in system tray + quicklaunch (nor it should since that's not what the function is for). However, the modify theme trick did help some. Instead of 800x600 icons in there, I get 1024x768ish icons :p. The size is definitely getting closer, but still a bit out of proportion.
