hehe i wrote GM a short message asking why i can never seem to find the gas milage rating on their hummer. here's what they're replying with: (8 mpg yay!)

Dear Bao Duong,

Thank you for contacting HUMMER and for your interest in the 2005
HUMMER product line! Some larger vans, pickup trucks and sport utility
vehicles (SUVs) belong in the heavy-duty vehicle category, which contain
vehicles that have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than
8,500 pounds. Fuel economy regulations do not apply to these types of
vehicles, so they are not tested and fuel economy labels are not posted on
their window stickers. The HUMMER H2 has a GVWR of 8,600 pounds and
falls into this category that is not tested by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) for fuel economy ratings. Please understand that no
test can simulate all possible combinations of conditions (like traffic
conditions, climate, driver behavior, and car care habits) and actual
fuel economy depends on how, when and where a vehicle is driven.

In order to provide fuel economy standards, the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tests vehicles under identical conditions.
After a manufacturer tests pre-production prototypes of a new vehicle
and submits the results to the EPA, they confirm the accuracy of that
data by re-testing vehicles. During the EPA's testing the vehicle is
driven by a professional driver under controlled laboratory conditions on
an instrument similar to a treadmill. This procedure ensures that each
vehicle is tested under identical conditions so that the results can be
compared with confidence. These tests are also used to certify that
vehicles meet the Federal emissions and fuel economy standards.

The HUMMER H2 's fuel tank does have a 32-gallon capacity, with a 310+
mile range for lengthy trips so you won't have to stop for gas! The
fuel tank also has its own heavy plastic shield, designed to absorb
abrasions and hits that would otherwise contact the tank. Octane level is
often another concern, but the HUMMER H2 Owners Manual recommends an 87
Octane level. If the octane level used is less than 87, you may hear a
heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, we recommend that
you use a gasoline rated 87 or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise,
you may damage the vehicle and void your warranty.

We hope that this information answers your question. If you need
additional information or have further questions, please let us know via
email or by calling HUMMER Marketing at 1-800-732-5493, between 9:00 AM -
9:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Again, thank you for
contacting HUMMER!

Sincerely,

Marci Fox

I wonder if Hummer didn't just add an extra 100 Lbs. to push it to 8,600 Lbs. - to avoid having to fess up to the fuel economy ratings?
