I received an email from the University of California Lick Observatory asking me if they could use one of my images for "various publicity materials", which included immediately using as their FB banner 😛

Nice! If there were any professional photogs here, they would probably complain about you giving your work away for free and killing the market for the pros. Screw em though. This is what happens when your chosen profession is also an increasingly popular hobby for other people. Getting your photos acknowledged and used by other people is a great accomplishment and reward enough for most people.
 
I remember this pic, and posting that I found it very impressive! Lick folks have confirmed that I have a good eye 😉 (Yes, I'm desperately trying to make this my thing 🙂)

Always a nice feeling when someone asks to use your work. I actually had a request from a book publisher to use an image off my site a while back, it was just a picture of a fan lol, but it's cool to know it's going to be in a book. They will add my site to the credit list at the end of the book.

Actually I wonder if any stock image sites buy pictures from random people, like if they have a list they need stock images of. Could be a fun side gig. Would be cool to see your pic actually show up on a product.
 
Great job! That is a really awesome shot too. I've never had anything quite like that happen, but after moving out west to St. Albert, Alberta and taking some shots around a provincial park here, St. Albert tourism messaged me on Instagram asking if they could use one of my photographs in their newsletter. It's the first time anything like that happened, so I was really excited and honoured. Of course I obliged. Turned out just to be a tiny little square alongside a bunch of others out of IG that they liked, but still - I guess I can sorta kinda relate to that feeling you have when someone wants to feature your image somewhere? 😀

If anyone wants to complain, I say let 'em! If you're an amateur/hobbyist photog and people want to feature your work, I think that's freaking awesome. haters gonna hate, let them be jealous.
 
That is a really good photo. UC isn't really hurting for money. I bet they would have compensated you had you asked. You never know until you ask. Case in point, Similac (baby formula company) wanted to use a couple of my photos. After some negotiating, I was paid $1500/photo by them.

How was it that Similac originally found your photo? Did you have some on a stock photo site?
