The successor of the often criticised UN Commission of Human Rights assumes shape. Here's the list of the 47 member states (the Commission had 53). The period of office isn't defined definitely, a 3 year-system was proposed (therefor the 1, 2, 3 years-comments by every member state).
The bad news are that China, Saudi Arabia and Cuba got elected. On the other hand, the candidateships of Venezuela, Iran and Iraq failed.
As the only permanent member of the UN Security Council, the US didn't candidate. They consistantly oppose the new Council and were one of the very few nations that voted against it in March.
It will take some time until we can see how well the Council performs, and if it is better than the Commission has been. I think that at least the latter question will be answered positively.
