Hum... good or bad?...

Ok, well... I decided, why not... take a 6800gt bios and flash my 6800 ultra to a GT, then overclock it to the same speeds, and test with benchmarks... So I do that, and I test in 3dmark05.. Also using my previous cards ( that I remember)..

x800xt flashed to pe = 6407
6800 ultra original = 6042
6800 ultra flashed to gt = 4659
6800 NU = 4108

now, what could be causing the ultra go get lower scores with the GT version?... Cause its a big drop IMO...

well it could be that you are using the wrong bios. The ultra and the gt have different ram latency timings and voltages I believe and using the wrong bios messes with that.

Nobody seems to be asking the obvious question here - Why would you downgrade your card, only to OC it? I don't understand the value in that. I understand flashing UP to the next higher card, like I did with an XT to a PE, but I don't see the reasoning in going backward. Like gac mentioned, lower cards have different ram timings as well as voltage requirements most likely. Now granted, it *should* be able to handle it, but if any of those voltage settings are handled in the BIOS and not hardwired on the board, you'll have problems.

DOH! You beat me to it bjc.

well some people have remarked that an OCd 6800gt can actually outperform the 6800ultra by a hair and maybe thats what ricemarine was hoping for. its still not a great idea but as long as you dont break anything I guess that there is no harm in trying.

yeah, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

it does, do you remeber Thugsrook? he or he and some mates wrote a bios for flashing an ultra to a GT, or a bios to do with upping voltages or something on the Gainward 6800gt

the reasoning behind it is that i think the Memory on the GT's had much tighter timings than the Ultras did. so running at like speeds, the oc'd GT out performed the ultra slightly

something like that

The GT's use very aggressive mem timmings compared to an Ultra. If you bios flash then run Ultra core/mem clocks, you will have better performance pretty much across the board.

To the origional poster: You might actually be having unoticable corruption which will slow down a benchmark. Try your GT bios flashed Ultra with lower mem clocks and see if your benchmarks improve. It could actually be your mem will not stand Ultra mem clocks combined with faster GT mem timmings.

ALSO you might try removing your drivers totally using Driver Cleaner then re-installing them. Sometimes a bios flash to another card requires this, especially if you have flashed bios's from 2 different manufactures.
