okay, maybe after playing 30 minutes of Red Orchestra so it makes watching paint dry exciting. But seriously, after right RO I played Painkiller (download from Steam) and it was like in uber-ultra-hyper-fast mode, I can't catch up at all.

I don't think cranking up the resolution all way would alleviate this problem, it's just reduce the FPS, not the speed game (monster will still charge at you at the same speed, but with more lag).

and so underclock the CPU? there gotta be a better way.

I do believe that you need to set the affinity to one CPU via Task Manager.

Ill have a look on this board as I read it recently.

Go into task manager and look for painkiller's .exe process. Set affinity to CPU1 or CPU0, but not both.

I appreciate the tip. I've got an AMD 4200 dual core. Disabling the 2nd core fixed me right up. I've been wanting to play this game since it came out. Now I've got to see how Descent runs (1, 2, and3).

Running XP and dual core AMD X2 CPU,you only need to download these two files that should fix all your gaming issues CPU wise.

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) - Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination to match the instantaneous user performance need. This package is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD processors on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 and x64 Editions.

More info here Link.

Do note NOT needed for Vista since it has native dual core support for AMD dual core CPUs etc...

Yeah, there's not much to this game other than killing everything that moves, which is fine by me. :D

It's not the games fault per say. The Windows timing API doesn't provide a real high resolution unless you bypass it.

Mem has a good explanation of the problem in his post.
