My mother is going through some financial hardship and needs to cut back so I was looking into ways to save her some money. She lives solely on her SSI that only gives her $850 a month and it goes fast. She was paying over $100 a month for Hughes net to provide her crappy satellite internet and phone service, I talked her into a $15 a month landline service Verizon offers to low income households and $15 a month internet from Time Warner that would probably ironically have lower latency and have no caps compared to the Hughes net. (I'm going to buy her the modem to spare her the awful $8 lease fee)
But she's also spending like over $100 a month for DirecTV just for the standard package and DVR. No HBO, Starz, anything fancy. This seems crazy to me as she mostly watches ABC, CBS and sometimes food network. But I can't talk her into just going with basic cable or OTA or giving up the dvr. She can't go back to not being able to rewind or record television. So now I'm looking at netflix/roku/Hulu all kinds of stuff to see if I can find something to fill the gap for less than a Benjamin a month. But the thing is I don't know ANYTHING about this stuff other than it's streaming and they do shows and movies and what not. I have googled some of the broader details, but I don't know any of the quirks or pitfalls or other things to bear in mind when seriously considering a service like this.
Any suggestions?
