Huh? No 12v power connectors in my new PC?

Just got a Dell XPS i7 PC, but I can't find any 12v power connectors/cables inside for things like IDE hard drives. It's a Serial ATA system, but I still need the 4-pin 12v power connectors! Is there a converter I can buy?

Dell, u suck 😉

thanks guys

It's a Dell. You may not have any EXTRA 12v connectors. They build them to spec for their machines, not for upgrading.

You talking about Molex connectors? Dell probably doesn't have any options for that machine that require Molexes, so they didn't put them on the PSU. Saves money that way.

You would probably have a hard time finding something to convert from SATA to Molex, because most people want to go the other way. 🙂

WARNING WARRANTY VOIDING TIME!
If you're handy with a soldering iron and don't care about the warranty, you can hack up a connector no problem. SATA power connectors have 5V, 12V, and ground so it would be a trivial project from an electrical perspective.

EDIT:

Found what you were looking for http://www.xpcgear.com/lp4satafm.html

What the crap, dudes. What about large case fans and other things that work off of the 12v?

mfenn that's what I need! thanks 🙂

Just to let you know, if you say "12v power connector" most people will think you mean the ATX12V connector or a PCIe power connector. What you're talking about is commonly known as a Molex connector and has 12V and 5V.

I like Rebate Monger's solution. I've used a like device. But, there is still uncertainty as to the availability of extra SATA power cables from the PSU. Are there any?

Dell is pretty likely going to provide one power connector for each drive bay in a desktop computer. If there's a place to put the drive, there's probably a power connector for it.

Wow. I just checked the price for SATA "Y" adapters. Those are pricey, at least at Newegg.
