Huh? How the bloody crap am I supposed to install video bios updates?

So I go to the dell site and find an upgrade for my vid bios. I DL it, figuring that I would extract the files to a CD since this unit doesn't come with a floppy.

So I click on it, and I get a message that I can't go any further since I don't have a floppy drive. Well I know that! 😕

*@#@$@@@ Dell!

I don't understand why all these damn flashing things require you to boot from a floppy.. Hell why do they even require that you do it from DOS?

They use DOS because there is less of a chance of a program accessing the hardware to be flashed whilst it is being flashed. Multitasking Windows means resident programs can cause problems.

If you can get into your BIOS and there is an option to boot from a USB device, I would recommend a small USB thumbdrive and put the bootable files there.

can you not just hit Ctrl at boot loader time and select 'command prompt only' or is that something that MS has done away with.

That was possible with Win98 and ME (with a hack), but Win2k and XP are not just shells of DOS like 9x so there is no real-mode DOS to boot in to.

Just for reference 🙂 With Win2k/XP, you hit F8 before the splash screen and you get choices for safe mode etc. and there is a command line interface to boot in to but this is not real mode DOS.

Check and see if there is another version on Dell's site that is installable from the HDD. I just d/led a bunch of drivers and crap from Dell's site for a old laptop I got for $25 and some of the drivers came in "install from floppy" and seperate "install from HDD" versions.
