There is no easy answer.

If you want SLI, nVidia wins....

As for game performance, it is a tossup.

ATI seems to be catching up on the OGL front
nvidia is still faster in "pure speed" (low AF no AA)
ATI is faster if you run quality (AA + AF)
nvidia has more pipelines
ATI does more with fewer pipelines
nvidia has mature drivers
ATI can OC to 1ghz core (recent and unconfirmed)
blah, blah, blah...

Basically, look at the pricetags... the bang for the buck is the current measure. nVidia was first out of the gate, and they have the lower price (for now).

Yeah, tough call because ATI is coming out with a new driver next month that speeds up some games.

But, at the present time, Nvidia's Purevideo beats ATI's Avivo (for watching DVDs etc). However, they also said ATI may improve their drivers.

It wouldn't be a tough call if you were thinking about the 7800 GT. Better deal for the price and you still got the "future compatibility" etc.

Yes, but who wants to buy two 7800 GTX when they're coming out with Geforce 8 next summer?

The only thing I know about Geforce 8 right now is the fact that it's allegedly going to be 4 times more powerful than the 6800 Ultra. Just did a quick calculation and in FEAR, the 7800 GTX only beats the 6800 Ultra by 40%. But, I bet you they're still charging a hefty price for the 6800 Ultra. (Just did a quick search and prices for the 6800 Ultra are completely retarded.)
