Hi there,

as the title says, i just turned my computer on, and on my system disk (Intel X25 G2 80GB SSD) has only 18GB of free space left. I would swear, when i was turning it off yesterday, there was over 27 GBs of space left... there seems to be no Windows update and 9GB missing anyway....would be hell of an update...

One perhaps important thing, i swapped today my former 12GB of RAM (6x2GB sticks) for brand new 24 gigabytes (again 6x4 combo)... could there be any connection? Nothing comes to my mind and everything seems to be running normally, all 24GBs are detected....

Any suggestions, what is going on? Thanks for help in advance....

Windows 7 takes 75% of your memory amount for the hibernate file. If you dont use hibernate then you can get all that space back. Open up the command prompt as administrator and type "powercfg –h off" without the " and hit enter. Exit out of the command prompt and check again and all the missing space will be back.

I guess you didnt notice it before but it already put 9GB aside for 12GB of memory. When you added 12GB more, it took another 9GB from you. You will free up 18GB of space this way.

Wow, thanks for such a prompt answers, will check the hibernation file now...already checked the pagefile and its on 300 MBs as it was before, so no change there.

EDIT: Solved, it was the hibernation, now i am on 36GBs of free space. Hooray! I do not use hibernation and when i built this rig almost 2 years ago, as i was setting it up (checking TRIM related stuff, moving temp files off SSDs, limiting pagefile to those 300 MBs), i thought i switched hibernation off. Seems, either it happened only in my head or i failed somehow, as i tried to do it.

Anyway, thanks to you all for help again.

Glad you solved it... and this works as a reminder to everyone that if you have a SSD, you don't really need the hibernation function anymore...

Entirely possible an update to SP1 might have turned back on.
