Hey,

I've got a huge Windows 2000 (Professional Edition) TCP/IP problem, as the msg title says. Recently, I've been unable to connect to my college's ethernet connection. I had just previously used Ad-Aware to remove "New Dot Net" software; apparently the program embedded itself deep within the operating system and had messed around with the TCP/IP files. Upon removing "New Dot Net" from my computer, my TCP/IP software became completely corrupted. I know my ethernet port is fine as I've had my roommate test it, and so is my cable that my roommate also tested. I'm fairly sure that my ethernet adapter is fine; it's built in to my Inspiron 8000. I was able to ping servers and use "ipconfig /all" to see basic network settings, so I'm fairly sure this is a problem at the software level. My IP address came up "0.0.0.0".

I thought I could just remove TCP/IP protocol and re-install it; after some trouble (I had to first remove Simple TCP/IP Services) I was finally able to remove it. Then, when I tried to re-install it I kept getting the following message: "Could not add the requested component. The error is: A non-recoverable error occurred during a database lookup.". I figure maybe some basic operating system files were also corrupted, and so I went through Emergency Recovery Disk process. That didn't seem to fix anything, because when I try to reinstall TCP/IP I get the same exact message. I've tried say "Have Disk" and pointing it to "Windows\inf", but I still get the same message. I just can't install TCP/IP and without that I can't connect to the Internet.

On an unrelated note, after going through the repair process, I also can't access encrpyted files on my hard drive. The files were using the encrpytion built into W2K, the one you can use set through the file's property attributes. I've made sure I have the file permissions under full control and logged in as an Administrator, but I still can't access the files. There were no thrid-party encrpytion programs used. These were simple TXT documents that can't be opened anymore, notepad just says "Access denied.". How can I access these files? Anyone know why this has happened?

I would truly appreciate any help with this situtation; preferably I don't want to have to install Windows back in, but if that's the only solution I guess I would have no choice. Please help... :(

Sounds like you might be able to get away without formatting just install Windows 2000 over itself. That should reset everything without erasing anything.

Easiest way, back up everything, format and reinstall OS. Save yourself the headache.

next time, be careful of what you install or limit what others are installing onto your computer. just one program could @#$% everything up.

Yeah, it was installed way back when I had - surprise - Kazaa. I thought Ad-Aware had removed all Kazaa crapware before, but only the latest ref files removed "New Dot Net". I ended up fixing my problem by installing XP over W2K installation; re-installing W2K would've erased a lot of my personal files and I don't have any backup method at college. XP stores folders such as "My Documents" differently than w2k, and as such, didn't erase my W2K documents. Though all system files got erased and replaced. Now, I can just do a little of cut and pase to bring XP up to date. I'm going to keep XP because of system restore and my college offers cheap, legal versions of XP without the mess of product activation. Thanks for the help and suggestions, btw.
