Huge Problems Installing SSD on ThinkPad X120e

My mom's X120e was running rather sluggishly, and we had the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB on sale at work for $50, so I bought it.

I tried to see if it would recognize it from the get-go, and it didn't. I checked online to find that you need to download some stupid firmware update in order for SSDs to work, and this firmware update is not made available through the ThinkVantage Update and Drivers utility. The firmware update read-me says that, for some insane reason, you can only use an optical drive that is internally on the computer to do the update; a USB DVD Drive will not work. The ThinkPad X120e does not come with an optical drive, so I have no idea what I should do. Here is the read-me file for the update: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/fwss26en.txt

Any ideas?

That update is for systems with an SSD installed to them from the factory. This is not an update for the X120e itself, it would update a factory installed SSD's firmware.

What you are saying is that when you put the SSD into the machine, it doesn't see the SSD? Where are you looking to see the SSD?

Yeah, it doesn't see the SSD. When I go to install Windows through my USB DVD drive it doesn't appear on the list. It also doesn't appear on the list of bootable devices.

Is there a bios update for the Laptop? That would be the first place I would start.

Yeah, there was an update and I installed it before I tried installing the SSD.

Upon further investigation I found out it was DOA, though. Drive wasn't detected on any of my three machines either by the EFI or the OS.

Sorry for wasting your time. 😳
