Huge power outage in my area

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
Nearly 20k customers affected. Looks like it's most of the city and other surrounding areas.

I'm on the same grid as the hospital so go figure, not out for me. I always kinda suspected it since there's high voltage distribution that shoots straight from in front of hospital and t here's a bunch of switchgear to switch power over between two different substations.

Pretty crazy stuff though. Have not seen an outage like that in quite a while.

Dang that's a pretty big outage. So do you have power still since you're on the same grid as the hospital? Any word on the cause yet or is it still to early to tell?

Yeah, got a bunch of flickers and that's it. From what I remember from working at the hospital they are on two grids, and everything is half on one and then the other but they can switch if they need to. There's also two sets of 3 phase HV cables right in front with some switches, and then that HV line just keeps going and feeds my whole area too.

Supposedly a 500kv line tripped due to over production. So much for the anti EV people and "our grid can't handle it". 😛 We apparently need more load on the grid at night.

That sounds like a load management issue for OPG. However, I know that for them to do that, major industrial users MUST inform them of planned changes in their loads - typically 15 to 30 min in advance of a major change. Without warnings from those heavy users OPG could be caught by surprise. Of course, if one of those users has a major upset and can't warn fast enough, the effect can ripple back along the grid.

Yeah the mine here has to actually inform them before they do a shutdown. But OPG is not well known for managing load very well. They pay the US to take excess load and then buy extra from Quebec when they give too much to the US. That's why our bills are so high lol.

You'd think they could have fly wheels or battery reserve to handle the load differences for short periods and then do further adjustments to dams for longer load changes.

They have a switch for that....
