Huge Poll: What's AT's general preferences on Cars?

Vote and explain if you must.

I figured I had some time on my hands and I'd like to know exactly how AT Garage would buy given the opportunity.

If you have time, please comment on your choices and reasoning.

Most cars are in alphabetical order, except for the M3, forgot about that.
All engine and trim choices are included in the model class unless otherwise noted
All Models are 2008

I chose
Nissan Versa-Most power and space in class, no brainer.

Mitsubishi Lancer-I really like how aggressive the Lancer looks and how it handles like a sport compact.

Mitsubishi Eclipse-Most power in class, FWD, but hey it's more of a softer grand tourer than a true sport car, at least it look nice, like the 1995-199DSMs and it's the only convertible on the list.

Audi A3/A4-Something about nice turbo power and the Audi dynamics that make me like it over the 3 class and even my beloved Lexus Brand's offerings.

Toyota Camry- I've had a Toyota Camry in the family for as long as I can remember. Never any problems and the new Gen 6 is quieter at full throttle than a Mercedes Benz S Class, Quieter at idle than a Rolls Royce Phantom and Accelerates to 60 as quickly as a 350Z. That's quite a bit of impressive engineering right there, considering the price for a SE-V6.

Honda Accord Coupe - I don't buy or recommend Hondas, especially accords if I cant help it. I was hit as a pedestrian, running along the side of a road by a driver in a Accord and since then I haven't been comfortable with Hondas, but the new Accord coupe is damn attractive and should be a great driver.

Cadillac STS- I like Cadillac's design and the Northstar V8 is a great engine. A family member almost bought a fully loaded STS V8 and I was very impressed by the car's interior, exterior and driving dynamics when I test drove it.

Dodge Charger-Nothing more manly and fast than a Charger. Besides, look at the competition, Impala? Grand Marquis? Kia?

Maserati Quattroporte - "This Is My Maseratil..." Nuff said

Saturn Sky Redline - 260hp, convertible, beautiful

Lotus Exige S- 0-60 in 4.1s, no rear vision at all, no power steering...

Porsche 911 GT3- Current 911 is most beautiful generation ever and the GT3 si the best handling ever.

Ferrari 599GTB- Something about 600+hp and Ferrari gets me.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur GTC-Only semi sporty selection of them all.

regarding mid-level sports:
i voted for my dear G35 as an only-car daily driver, but if we eliminate cost and real world usability, i would pick
1. Elise/Exige
2. Boxter
3. G35

i haven't voted yet but i will bookmark this for later to see what people say.

i find this pretty much an inconclusive way to get the community's general preferences on cars. don't get me wrong; i'm totally for what you're doing but you have a lot of cars up against each other that are nowhere near the same price.

it's more evident in the higher up cars:
Premium Midsize: there's a lot of price fluctuation here, particularly between the two jaguars. the V6 X-type is like $25k cheaper than the V8 supercharged S-type. if i won a contest and had the option of picking one, obviously i'd go with the S-type even if i preferred the X-type. i'd just sell the S-type and bank whatever doesn't go towards the X-type.

Premium Large: idk anywhere i've seen a maserati compared to a cadillac.

Entry sport: the miata, sky, and solstice i can see compared to each other. how a mustang was added to this group is beyond me. mustangs and miatas have totally different driving purposes.

Mid-level/Premium Sports: how these things got grouped together is beyond me.

other groups: i guess whatever i've said so far can be applied to them.

i understand what i've written may be a little excessive to some degree and i know you've grouped the cars according to class as best as possible, but doing that alone can't really bring people to vote for what they would truly get within the specified category. why click "Lexus SC430" when "Maserati Granturismo" is listed immediately underneath it? idk the Granturismo's price but i do know the MBZ SL65 AMG Roadster is like 3 times the SC430's price.

am i taking this too serious? it may seem so but i'm just saying you could make this a little more realistic. maybe not have cars that have more than a 30% price difference in the same category or something like that.

if the other ATers could post suggestions, i think that would be great

Well I could do more categories but here's my logic for the groups

Subcompact, compact, should be self explanatory.
Sport Compact is ~18-25K base Sporty Compact cars
Premium Compact is 25K+ Compact cars

Midsize is generally under 30K Family sedans, same for Midsize Coupes.
Premium Midsize are cars with 30K+ base prices. I guess I can further develop this to more categories, but lest face it, a further category for the Semi Premium, uncompetitive X-type doesn't make sense anyway. I just included the X-type because hey, tis a listing of all cars, but I don't actually expect anyone to actually like the horrible X-type.

Large is for Sedans under 40K
Premium are for the Large Sedans with base prices above 40K

Entry Sports are for any sports cars under 30K
Mid level is 30-65K
Premium is 70k-120K base
and Exotic is at least 130K.
Exotic cruisers all have base prices at least around 180K, otherwise known as where the S class tops out at.

I'll definitely look at separating say some cars like the Acura RL(50K base from the Quattroporte(100K base) but I'll have to see how it all fits then.

Well it's tough to sort them strictly based on size because they don't always align perfectly against their competitors. The Cadillac CTS is priced near a BMW 3-series but it's dimensions make it a 5-series competitor.

I voted for:

Honda Fit
Mazda Mazda3
Volvo C30
Cadillac CTS
Saturn Aura
Pontiac G6 (or Honda Accord, if you consider the 2008 coming out in Sep)
BMW 5-series
Pontiac G8
Audi A8
Saturn Sky
Chevy Corvette (base)
Audi R8 for sexiness / Corvette Z06 for performance
Lamborghini Murcielago
Rolls Royce Phantom

I like what you're doing here. It was a fun poll actually. The groupings are a little rough though. It would also depend on if I'm spending my money, or imaginary dream money. I would change some of my votes if it's my money and I'm trying to get the best value, as opposed to having an unlimited budget of money that someone gave me that had to be spent on a car only.

I said assume all are 2008 models, and for the most part all the cars should a) be hitting dealer lots very soon, or B) like the Drophead Coupe, never be in a dealership(special ordered limited production) so you'd never experience one anyway.

what is caddy cts doing anywhere near compact?

Because it's not midszie, priced along the lines of the 3 series and marketed as a 3 series competitor.

I anticipate value to be part of the judgment, but also everything else to be considered too. Assume you have to spend your own money.

Scion TC should be a sport compact. Thats the market its targeting.[/quote]

The tC would be a joke in the sport compact market. It's not sporty at all and I've always seen it as a upmarket Corolla coupe.

Maybe. I never drove one, but that is what it is marketed as. Bone dry TC spec is 15k, with some mods I am sure it can handle any of the other cars you have listed in that range and be in the right price category as the rest.

I mean hell you put a fricken Honda Civic in there, which is a pure ricer, and you refuse to put a scion TC? And then you put a Hyundai Tiburon... you contradict yourself.

Where the hell is the Cobalt SS Supercharged in the Sport Compact poll. :|

And shouldn't the Mid-level Sports poll include the Cadillac CTS-V?

The Tiburon is V6 powered while the Civic Si has 200hp and 0-60 in 6.3 seconds. The TC is like a 8.5-9 second 0-60 car.

Are they still selling last gen CTSes as 2008 CTS Vs? I though the last gen CTS-V production ended in 2007 for the new gen 2008 body and platform and we'll ahve to wait a few years for the new V.

The Cobalt SS stopped production in 2007. For 2008, you get the 2.0 or 2.4L Naturally aspirated putting out a max of about 175hp.

Supercharged SS Discontinued?!??!?! 🙁

I'm sure you're right about the CTS-V, as far as I know the new V won't be released till '09. 🙁

I love how the entry sport is all Ford and GM brands.
I guess the other companies think that sport cars are only for rich people.

I just got a Mazda6 so you should know where I stand on that 😉

I can't believe that so many people like the Honda Fit....I think its almost as fugly as the Scion tc. I also like the Corvettes, Lambo Murcielago, and BMW 5 series.

TL, G35, BMW 3-series, saab 9-3, lexus IS, VW passat, volvo S40, mercedes C-class, cadillac CTS should belong in the same class: premium sports sedan. IS/3-series are NOT compacts...

I didn't vote for the Fit; actually I just viewed the results... but the Fit is freaken cool looking, man. Although new Civic coupes are even better looking. Besides the back lights, newer Civic coupes are my favorite looking car period... next to NSX's.

How can you think tC's are ugly? I don't think they are too special, but definitely far better looking than most cars.

I really don't understand people's opinions on exterior appearance of cars. It's something I care about far more than most people, and my brother is the only person I know who has somewhat similar taste. How can you look at a Mustang or Charger and think it's anywhere close to looking cool? Charger's are freaking ugly as hell.
