62% in four years seems like par for the course.

I bought a GOOD 17" monitor about $700 about 7 years ago or so... and now, well you can't get a GOOD 17" monitor now, but a GOOD 19" is around $300.

Seems to be about the same trend as we've been following at least for the last 10 years or so, because before my GOOD 17" for $700 I had a GOOD 15" for $700.

Only if you are one of the "special" few. In four years you normal users can finally upgrade to pentium 2 for 62% of the price.

I read an article on HardOCP last year that Intel had supposedly developed some technology that would allow for 40" LCD screens to be mass produced for under $1k by around Christmas time. That was last Christmas btw. :p

Wait a sec. The article said PRODUCTION costs will go down by 62%.
That doesnt mean anything for sales price.
Folks rarely sell anything these days for a price based on production costs, thats why you can pay a lot less for the exact same product one month later.

They have to sell to make money. Even if it means a smaller profit.
If a company makes something $100 cheaper, they probably wont pass that on to the consumer.

However, this is counterbalanced by the fact that it's a competitive market -- if the costs drop about the same amount for all manufacturers, at least one of them will eventually try to undercut the others in order to gain market share at the expense of short-term profit. Then the others will have to match their prices to stay competitive. Yay capitalism.

There are enough panel manufacturers and monitor builders/resellers that collusion between all of them is highly unlikely. Although as long as demand stays high (and it seems to be growing, if anything), and manufacturing capacity doesn't go through the roof, prices will probably drop relatively slowly.

OLED is what I can't wait to see what they do with. I've read a lot of hype around the massive screens and implementations that OLED technology can lead to. I guess one of the real good benefits of OLED is it is still bright even in direct sunlight. Sony has a portable video handheld player in Japan only that uses OLED.

They damn well better have with all the customer complaints of dead pixels.
LCD's are a defective technology as they cannot get the same results everytime they produce one. The cost of the LCD's should reflect the imperfections. IMHO.

I bought 2 17 Dell UltraSharps about 2 years ago. One for my wife and the other for my Mom. No dead pixels and they have nice picture quality. They don't game, so it fit them fine. They were on sale at the time for 350.00 each. Not a bad deal at the time. But you can bet if I received these monitors with dead pixels, Dell would not receive a payment from me until they corrected the issue.

Just 4 years ago a 15" LCD cost $800. So yes, i certainly hope in 4 years, prices would drop.
