Huge junk files found on backups of My Document folder

I would copy the My Documents folder to an external HD (2.5", 80GB, NTFS) for backups and before I reinstall Windows XP. I've done this a few times and it's been working fine. Recently I ran Windows OneCare safety scan and it found over 6GB of Obsolete Data Stores on my external HD.

My external HD is almost full so I'm concerned by the large amount of junk files. Is it safe to delete them? Would using a dedicated backup software for my simple needs alleviate the junk files?

Those 6GB of System Restore data can be safely deleted.

If you are happy with the way your PC is currently running, then I'd delete those System Restore files and then make a current System Restore Point. The System Restore Points are used to recover your PC's System State to an older version in case you get infected by a worm or other System tragedy occurs. You only need one "good" Restore Point to do a System Restore.
