Huge Framerate Drops in Oblivion

Two months ago, I stopped playing Oblivion because I was faced with low framerates whenever I ventured out into the wilderness. Now, this never happened before. I was playing with everything at Very High in the configuration in the launcher at 1680*1050.

And now, I get back into the game and things are no longer the same, once again. Somewhat high framerates in cities, low ones outside. It never used to be like this dammit! ALTHOUGH I DID try to tinker with the Nvidia Control Panel for Oblivion...but I believe its all on default now (tried to put HDR and AA on). But yeah...still low framerates...

I have an E4300 @ 3.2GHz and an 8800GTS 640MB @ stock.

1. How much ram do you have? I don't know about oblivion but Company of Heroes suffers horrible FPS on max settings if you have 2GB only. But doesn't with 4GB (or if you slightly lower settings).
2. Usually something like that can be overcome by disabling a single buggy setting... For example NWN2 had something similar which was due to a loop bug in their water reflection code. Disabling that one individual feature tripled the FPS. (and didn't change the appearance since the reflectiveness wouldn't finish calculating anyways, it was bugged, doh!). It took them monthes after release to catch and fix that...
So go google about it, and look in their official forums. You can also try experimenting with disabling individual grapgical settings.

I got the same thing with The Fighter's Stronghold add-on a while back. Whenever I would venture outside that castle, my framerate would dip down below 10 fps -- totally unplayable. The rest of the game was fine, even The Shivering Isles.

Did you install a new mod or a texture pack before you quit the last time?

Are your multi-threaded tweaks for oblivion.ini enabled?

Does lowering game settings fix the problem, or is it a hardware/config problem with your PC?

I have 2GB of RAM

As for the multi-threaded tweaks...nope, they're not enabled (I don't think)

I reset the values to its default settings (Medium) and still. incredibly low framerates.

BTW, no mods or anything. Just the Fighter's Stronghold and Shivering Isles. That's it.
