A massive fire sparked by the derailment of a train carrying crude oil is still burning in the eastern Quebec town of Lac-Megantic.

Some people in the town were reported missing, but officials have been unable to get close enough to the fire to determine if there have been any fatalities following the early-morning derailment.

“Unfortunately, we do fear that there are going to be casualties,” Quebec provincial police Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado told CTV News Channel on Saturday.

At least 1,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes in Lac-Megantic, which is located about 250 kilometres east of Montreal.

A Facebook group was quickly set up to help people track down loved ones who couldn't be reached by phone.

A number of the train’s 73 cars exploded shortly after 1 a.m., causing a fire that spread to several of buildings in the community.

“There were 73 wagons in that train last night, and almost all of them are on fire right now,” Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said.

Brunet said approximately 120 firefighters remain at the scene Saturday morning while about 30 buildings in downtown Lac-Megantic have been affected by the fire.

“It’s a major blast and of course there are some stores and some residences that were in the trajectory of the fire and those are the main buildings that are affected,” Gomez del Prado said.

The train belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic. According to the company’s website, it serves Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick and owns more than 800 kilometres of rail tracks.

Lac-Megantic resident Claude Bedard told The Canadian Press that the town has never seen anything like the fire.

“It’s terrible,” he said. “The Metro store, Dollarama, everything that was there is gone.”

A number of neighbouring communities, including Sherbrooke and Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, were asked to help Lac-Megantic deal with the fire.

“Firefighters are working hard to extinguish that fire, but it’s burning hard because of the crude oil,” Gomez del Prado said. “So we’re trying to secure the area for now and after that we’ll try to extinguish the fire as soon as we can, but that’s going to take a while for sure.”

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known.

Brunet said some crude oil has spilled into the lake and there’s some concern about fumes surrounding the derailment site.

“Right now, so far, the smoke is going very high, so there’s no problem for the population so far,” he said.

Five people now confirmed dead, 40 more still missing. A lot were in a local night club within the blast radius, which was completely destroyed. Coroners say the force of the blast may have completely incinerated some victims.

Some more pictures.

Going to be a lot of questions over how it happened. It appears the train cars rolled quite some distance. There's also the question over how the original locomotive fire started.

this might be made into an episode of Mayday.

Hmm have they ever made episodes not involving planes? It definitely would make an interesting episode. This is quite significant. When I got the phone call at work about it I had no idea what the scale of it was till I saw the news. We lost two remote phone switches because of it, but pretty sure the people serviced by them are evacuated so that's the least of their worries at this point.

The scale is just incredible, and the way all those trains are placed suggests a pretty violent derailment. It's not like it just went off the track and tipped over and stopped. It kept going as it accordioned into itself at high speed.

Will be interesting to see what the investigation leads to though.

anyone know why they keep it under pressure?

I would assume they need to make sure that the tanks are 100% full to avoid sloshing. May also have something to do with keeping oxygen out.

I'm curious as to the specifics of this, too, though. If a rupture is able to spray oil, that's, you know...dumb. Disperse a flammable liquid into droplets and mix with oxygen = quality boom.

Those tank cars are stacked up almost like firewood...

I literally thought that was firewood and wondered why you posted it. Then I realized, no, those are some kind of little metal cylinders...then...yeah, holy shit, that's a pretty bad derailment right there.

One witness on TV said the train was going at least 100 kph when it entered a curve and derailed.

thats crazy, RIP to all the victims of this tragedy which I am sure the investigation will say "could have been easily avoided if...."

thats a big IF

I know you europeans like to be the center of attention, but something happened in America today which is why there is so little interest in this thread.

Link here fyi http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2329244

1. Canada is not in Europe.

2. This is bigger news than the plane crash. At least 10 dead, lots more missing, plus huge amounts of damage to buildings and properties vs just two people in the plane crash.

and props to the firefighters from Maine who came to help.

In other news, gas prices skyrocketed today.

Comments such as these in a thread where dozens of people have died are not appreciated.
