HUGE drive overhead in WinXP

I've recently reinstalled Windows XP and Vista on a new computer, previously, on my P4 machine WinXP seemed pretty speedy and Vista seemed a little meh, anyways, now Vista is running pretty fast, there is almost no CPU usage when browsing the hardrives and opening random folders is instantaneous.

But XP is driving me nuts in this matter, when browsing through HDDs I get 50% CPU usage which is outrageous, also when opening a folder sometimes it takes a full second (very noticeable and annoying) to actually open a folder, I thought the days of opening a folder and actually waiting to see its contents were over.

What can I do to reduce overhead in XP? Any suggestions? It may not seem like much but it's very annoying to try to open a folder and have to wait a second before it really opens.

It might be vista's indexing that is resulting in better performance for you.

what kind of hard drive is this, and perhaps try running a benchmark on HD tune?

indexing is for search not for browing files in explorer.
something else is wrong, there is no overhead in xp for large drives. its just as speedy with them as with any other drive.

I have two drives, they are both SATA and both are Seagate, 80GB and 320GB, but the CPU usage is 50% when browsing either drive.

I've already done the NTFS timestamp tweak and disabled indexing but the problem is still there, any ideas?
