I don't know what this is all about or if this is real, but a friend of mine currently living in Beijing told me today that she found a 128 GB USB flash drive for really cheap, as indicated in the thread subtitle. It seems too good to be true but she claims to have backed up most of her computer's hard drive as well as several movies onto the thing so it's not like it's using some sort of weird firmware to falsely report a higher capacity than what is real.

Now, she's not much of a computer person so she hasn't done any sort of reliability testing or anything. I thought there had to be some catch, but it seems like it's just a working, 128 GB flash drive. Thing is, it probably uses all sorts of shoddy components, but regardless, that quantity of flash memory isn't cheap no matter how you package it.

Has anyone heard of these before? I'm thinking of helping her set up a means of selling them in the U.S. and I want to make sure there isn't some trickery afoot.

I did a little more Google searching (should have done it a little earlier) and it seems like there are ways of faking the extra capacity. Next time she's online I'll ask her to actually test out all the files she moved to the drive. It's likely they won't work.

Sounds too good to be true, besides which I haven't seen any USB "thumb" flash drives over around 32GB in size. The SSD drives that are up to 64GB/128GB are all much larger.

Perhaps it is one of those micro-drives or 1.8" notebook drives and not actually flash?
