They refuse to come on therefore not displaying what my speed, mileage, temps, full or empty tank or not etc. when it's cold out. When I turn on my headlights, I can hear the alternator (I assume) get a bit louder than usual. Is it possible my alternator is going?

Is other stuff acting up too? It seems that an alternator would affect other things as well.

Not so much but I mean turning on headlights shouldn't put a strain on the alternator. For some reason (off topic a bit) none of the cars we've owned or I've owned have ever had air conditioning yet I hear of that being the most common problem, why? (In otherwords, nothing else electrical seems to be failing)

The car is 12 years old... Had 7 accidents (5 of which things were repaired) and had general but not extensive maintence.

Well, it's colder and so the engine will idle a little higher when you first start it in the morning when it's colder. While in park and you have just turned the car on try turning the steering wheel, rpm will go higher.

Pontiac Grand Prixs from the mid 90s and even some Nissans from the late 80s had HUD.

As for the OP: your talking about the electrolumincent guage cluster right? it has that neat 3D look to it?

Most likley it is a fuse or something.

yeah, *HUD* confused me. So it's a 93? I think they had the same type of gauge cluster as my '95 SC400.
That means it has an analog speedometer, rpm gauge, temp gauges, and gas gauge with an led odometer. does the ls400 have that wide lcd along the bottom?

anyways, if the entire gauge isn't working, look for a fuse. if the gauges are working but the lights aren't, the electronics on the board may have died. The best person to ask in regards to this is "O. L. T." on the clublexus forums (electronics expert with lots o experience on these gauge clusters, hehe).

Yup, although the fuse thing can't explain the fact it later turns on after the car heating up..

Cold LCDs dont work the way they are supposed to. Even on my brand new car, the LCDs lag, or ghost, however you want to call it, until the car warms up.

The material used in teh guage cluster could be temperature sensitive maybe? Or their could be moisture on the circuits or a specific connection that is causing it to crap out until the heat is up.
