pretty amazing stuff for a non-starter just a few months ago:

Third national poll out showing Huckabee in second place

WASHINGTON (CNN) ? Mike Huckabee has jumped into second place nationally in the Republican race for the White House, according to a new poll out Friday ? the third national survey this week to indicate the former Arkansas governor's surge is not limited to Iowa.

Huckabee registers support from 18 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters in a new AP/Ipsos poll, a number that puts him 6 points behind former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Arizona Sen. John McCain is in a close third with 13 percent ? virtually tied with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney at 12 percent and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson at 11 percent.

Huckabee's rise nationally seems to have hurt Thompson the most. A similar survey a month ago had the Tennessee Republican at 19 percent ? 8 points higher than his current position.

Huckabee's rise nationally follows his success in the crucial early-voting state of Iowa, where Christian conservatives make up a significant proportion of the state's Republican voters. The onetime Southern Baptist minister has made his conservative stances on social issues a centerpiece of his dark horse campaign and is now virtually tied with Romney there.

http://politicalticker.blogs.c...kabee-in-second-place/

Thompson is fading fast, but I can't imagine Romney is sleeping soundly either; his attempt to buy an election in Iowa seems to be yielding questionable results.

I believe -- though I don't have a link to back it up, I just heard it in passing on CNN -- that the same poll registered a 2:1 advantage for Clinton over Obama nationally. a Clinton v Huckabee race might be a real challenge if the Reps can churn out the evangelicals and anti-clintons to the polls in a way that 9/11 or Romney couldn't.

This is a shame as Huckabee has absolutely no chance against either of the democratic frontrunners.

In my opinion Huckabee is a passing fad ...............
Highly doubtful he'll be the next Rep nominee..

I agree with you... but I think if Huckabee takes Iowa and Rudy takes NH, Romney will be DOA by South Carolina, leaving Guiliani to sweep Super Tuesday.

I think Huckabee is going to make a nice VP candidate for someone, though.

Well he stated at Liberty University earlier this week or perhaps sometime lastweek that his surge in the polls is God's will or something like that.

Personally, aside from his horrible ethics problems - I think statements like this are going to hurt him. I don't think all that many people are interested in electing another guy who thinks he is on a mission from God to save the universe.

If a Presidential candidate took the stage and said, in a flawless impersonation of Dan Aykroyd, "We're on a mission from God," they would have my vote regardless of their stance on anything.

Such a great movie...

I'd vote for Huckabee over any of the Dems.

I'd vote for any of the Dems over any of the other Republicans.

Well if he was battling Illinois Nazi's, I might reconsider my position.

Like it or not, I think Huck has a certain charisma and inner calm that that resonates with voters. Any that underestimate him may be surprised.

That said, I don't think much of his ideas, but I didn't think much of GWB's ideas either. I did not vote for GWB, but he did become President anyway.

Never underestimate the I want to believe in that idiot vote.

Go, Huck, go!
Get the nomination!

Of course, that would guarantee a Democratic would win!

What conservatives? The Republicans are the least conservative party on earth.

Runaway spending? Not 'conservative' in any way.
Foreign Policy run by schizophrenic psychosis? Not 'conservative' in any way.
Destruction of Civil Liberties domestically? Not 'conservative' in any way.
The amnesty/open-border policies? Not 'conservative' in any way.

I have no sympathy for the simian knuckle-draggers who vote Republican because they think it's 'patriotic', or that they're supporting the 'conservative' movement. The 30-percenters deserve the garbage that they unblinkingly support, no matter how hopelessly corrupt and dangerous their idols become.

The Democrats are far from conservative, but a more sensible foreign policy combined with a domestic policy less overtly hostile to our constitution mean that they're actually more 'conservative' than 21st-century Republicans.

Both are pretty much worthless. Too bad we don't have a credible 3rd party.

<--- Paleoconservative with no party :(

I suspect these polls were taken before his hatred of carrots was widely known.

Given a choice between Rudy and Hillary, I'd take her. Given a choice between Huck and Hillary I'd pick him.

I'm not the only one.

How can we tell how many carat phony the guy is if he does not eat carrots? But there goes the bugs bunny vote and hello the Elmer Fudd vote.

But there is a certain sanity implied from an Edwards who will not eat magic mushrooms. And a certain danger in a Fred Thompson who will eat anything.

But Huck will seal the border. Does that mean Huck will eat seals? And how about Elephant Seals, almost cannibalism for a Republican.

But the hell with sealing the border, will he in Christ like behavior, drive the money changers from the temple?

Don't compare huckabee to bushie. He's not an idiot by any stretch of the imagination. It's nice to see somebody I called early on surging though.

Er no daveymark, Huck is showing strength among republicans. Us dimocrats are merely noting the event without causing it, touting it, or trying to prevent it.

And no matter who the Repubs nominate, its likely almost any democratic nominee will win the Presidency in 08.

The republicans are totally free to pick whomever they want. And there is zero evidence that there is any democratic reverse psychology operating on this thread.

Sorry to pierce your theory and delusion davey, but you repubs have a genuine problem that only better candidates will cure.
