Hubble obtains deepest space view: The Hubble Ultra Deep Field *Sneak preview PIC*

Analog

Lifer
The Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the deepest view ever of the cosmos, detecting the youngest and most distant galaxies ever seen by astronomers.
The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is the result of an unprecedented, long look of 80 days at just one patch of sky.

According to scientists, the picture reaches back to the Universe's "Dark Ages", before the first stars formed.

The image, which will be released in February, will be a major advance in our understanding of the cosmos.

Beautiful, rich, intriguing

Hubble has been peering at the same point in the heavens since September. Its detailed scrutiny of the region ends on 16 January.

i used to have the deep field as my bckground for a while, awesome to think about

They need to have the HBMST, the Hubble Background Making Space Telescope. It can take a picture, put it as a background, and decide if it's cool or not.

<homer>AWWW.. I want my new background picture now!</homer>

We need more Hubble-type telescopes.. like.. perhaps putting a big fat telescope on the moon would be a feasible idea.. though, we'd hafta cover it with some sort of force-field (invent it, b1tch!) to keep the space stuff from scuffing it up. I want my own remote-control telescope to control.

Hubble's successor will be launched around 2010 from last I heard. It will have significantly more aperture than hubble (light-gathering ability) and it will have an orbit much more distant than Hubble's.

IIRC, won't the successor also be an array of scopes? Each one more powerful than Hubble, but in the array form they would have even more power? Or am I thinking of another planned telescope?

How long has the current Hubble been in orbit? How often do they usually update it with new equipment?

The official HST succesor is JWST I believe link not array but composed of mirror segments unfortunately
