Hub versus switch...

I have both a switch and a hub, both Linksys. I'll be connecting up to four PCs, all sharing a single cable connection, but each with seperate IPs. Pardon my noobishness, but which piece of hardware is most desirable?

Cheers.

Switch. At current prices, there is absolutely no excuse for the existance of hubs.

Oh, and you will notice a difference in a home network.

yes indeed.

The only reason hubs existed at all was because Your Average User couldn't afford a switch...

Right now I'm using my nice, free after rebate 8-port 10/100 switch from Newegg. No complaints.😎

Right on! 😀

Switch adds better security -(at a basic level of directing traffic port to port instead of broadcasting machine specific traffic across all ports.), and better performance/throughput when multiple computers are transmitting data (large volume) at the same time.

For the extra $$$ (which isn't much these days ) go with a switch.

Also, you need a switch/router to do NAT, unless you're using Internet Connection Sharing. This will make your life a lot easier than if you use a hub. The price difference now is negligible anyway...

If all four computers are using the connection at the same time, will the network with the switch be surviving better than the one with the hub?

A switch is in all ways better than a hub, a Hub is just a dumb switch that can't tell who to send the data to so it sends it to everyone (ie all the ports) and then discards info that isn't desired.
