Hub/switch..whats the different??

I'm deciding if i should buy a hub or a switch.
I heard that a hub gives all computer the same amount of bandwidth even when some computers are not log on. Is it true??
switch give full amount of bandwidth to ever user that log on and divide the bandwidth by the amount of users on. am i correct??
If i do decide to buy a hub, should i go with 10baseT or 100??

Here we go again... A hub acts like a repeater. It sends any signal it receives to all other devices on the network. A switch only sends the signal to the computer which it is destined for. This keeps the lines free for all the other comptuers and lets them transmit or receive while other computers are doing the same thing. On a hub, the signals would collide and get corrupted, resulting in a re-send and slowing down communication. Switches also allow full-duplex, which is when a device can send and receive at the same time on one connection. These two features are good for large segments with namy users. Lots of people transmitting at the same time results in lots of collisions and a generally slower network. For a small network (1 - 10 computers) a hub is usually sufficient unless there is heavy network traffic expected. With the price of small workgroup switches falling, now is a good time to get one. Even if you really don't need it, it could come in handy if you decide to expand your network later. Good Luck,

I know how both works but not good at explaining it. But I will try. A hub just sends information out to all computers and is shared but this is how network collisions happen. A switch lets each computer have thier own seperate bandwidth so collisions are less likely to happen. With either one you still have the same amount of bandwidth.

Depends on what you want and money. Just make sure your hub supports 100MBPS and the same with the Networking Cards.
