Since I will be getting a new computer (6 months or so) and my RR only supports three computers... will there be a way for me to hook up my router so that...I hook up 4 computers to my hub then from the hub connect to the router...? so it would be like a 4 port router... then 1 would be used by hub... so 3 open and then the 4 on the hub would be taken by the 4 computers... get it? im asking this because I also have a laptop or 2....so a 4 port router alone would not solve my problem... thnaks!

I'm guessing that you have three IPs from your RR service, right? I'm not familiar with RR, but it sounds like they look for mac address to connect. I think you'd have to clone a current mac address to the router and stick other computers behind the router, but I'm not certain that would work.

If you do have 3 IPs, why not save $ by dropping back to one and invest in a good 8 port router? For the laptops, you could even go wireless.

I have RR and I use the SMC Barricade 4 port router to network. Using the one IP from RR I have up to 4 systems connected when I add my laptop.

The router uses the one IP assigned to it then uses NAT to direct the traffic to any system on the network. Just get an 8 port router.

I recently set up a SMC wireless router on RR for a friend. I say go right for that if you can afford it and the wireless cards. Orinoco cards are recommended. I may be upgrading my setup to the wireless soon. I like the idea of having mobility with my laptop. Sitting on the deck surfing sounds good.

First, you have to find out from RR how they anticipate the usage of 3 IPs. The connection depends on their "authentication scheme".

If you find out that your cable Modem can go to a Hub first, you can connect the Hub to the Modem put two Computers with two independent IPs on the hub, and use the third IP for a Cable/DSl Router.

The question that you have to ask yourself is why do you want to connect the two computers outside of the Router.

If you just want to have a Local Network, and share the Internet it does not make sense to use such an arrangement. The two ?outside? computers are off the Hardware Firewall, and your Network with them will be problematic, and slow. The main usage of such arrangement is suitable for Servers, but than RR does not allow Servers. If you think that your can ?suck? more bandwidth? I doubt, check with RR if three IPs offer such advantage.

hello, thanks for the replies... right now I am running three computers with three different IPs and RR supports up to three IPs and thats why I need to invest in a router.. so I guess I am going for the 8 port router... :) thanks guys
