Hub and Router

I have a Linksys router which I have been using for 2 years now on a small home network. Recently I picked up an HP Advanced Switching Hub, on the advice of a friend. What is the difference between the two? I'm expanding the home network to a total of 6 computers. I was told the HP Hub was more secure and more options, etc. I was thinking about using it down from the router but could I use it by itself. I have a cable connection.

"I THINK THIS IS RIGHT"

U cant use the HUB by itself UNLESS you get a computer to server your internet connection, IE using a program like smoothwall (which is a FIREWALL that runs on its own, and is VERY secure.) you then put the computer that is serving the internet into the uplink port on the router.....usually the last one.

The above should work, BUT i would surgest using the router first to serve the net and then running it through the hub. it will be a hell of a lot easier and you dont have to have another computer just to serve the NET.

Hope i helped

a router is a clever switch and a switch is just a clever hub now some really clever swithes can act as routers some say a router is just a layer3 switch hmm gets confusing 😛

Thanks for the help. I am building a server right now. (Why? because I don't have a life 🙂 If I'm understanding correctly, I can connect the cable line to the router then to the hub then to the server but there is no advantage in doing this. It will look cool maybe. Anyone need a switching hub.

Thanks.
It is time to update these pages.

they say "switch where you can, route where you must"

but here ya gotta use the router 🙂 then use the switch to get more ports
