The "REAL" reason, Trump calls Huawei a security threat, is because, the phone is miles ahead of any garbage google or apple could come up with, and the Chinese made CPU surpasses apples fastest. Apple and Google see the handwriting on the wall, and are trying to protect American tech giants. If this phone gets cheap enough, it may be my next phone ... just for the 50X zoom alone!

Kinda sad, that if you try to compete with the major players in the US we will throw you under the bus. Bad move for US, but China has 1.3 Billion customers along with other countries. Meanwhile we get crap cameras and slow cpus. Problems you go up against when we have a monopoly in the cellphone market.

Er, no. First: Trump isn't clever enough for that reasoning (that's a P&N thread), and you'd need actual evidence if you were going to suggest that Apple and Google were hatching a fiendish plot. Hell, suggesting Google was behind this would be silly, since Google made money from Huawei licensing Android for phones outside of China -- possibly more than it does producing Pixel phones. And someone in Europe isn't going to buy a Pixel if they can't get a Huawei phone, they're going to get the Samsung du jour.

Also, I know you're enthused for the P30 Pro and want to declare it the absolute best at everything, but... calm down. The truth is that Kirin 980-based phones are slower than the iPhone X in some tests, and unambiguously slower than the iPhone XS. Moreover, you only get that vaunted 50X zoom digitally (the best 'real' zoom is 10X, which is still good), and it's not very useful unless you can hold particularly still when capturing a subject that far away. The P30 Pro is still a great phone in many respects, but it doesn't need to be superior in every way for you to feel good about buying it.

The boring reality is that the concerns around Huawei focus on security, not competition, and they mostly revolve around networking equipment more than handsets. Whether or not those are valid is another story (the US has yet to show public evidence to that effect), but the US has spent most of its energy trying to discourage companies from using Huawei's wireless infrastructure.

No, trump isn't that smart... that's for sure... But, I think apple and google, clearly a monopoly on the cellphone market and are running scared from the new hardware that is coming from China. Cook and Trump were talking a lot before he started in on slapping huawei with antitrust claims. If you look at apple and Obama, they pretty much gave apple the green light to throw out court cases against them. But, I guess when you are the #1 company in terms of value... I wouldn't put it passed trump to listen to cook. This isn't P/N because it's a reality that one of the best Chinese phones market won't be available here.

First off, there isn't a SINGLE phone on the market that is PERFECT... Not sure how you got to this point.... Oh..OK, calm down, show me any phone on the market that has optical zoom let alone 10X with real optical image stabilization...Go, ahead, I'll wait. 50X is a big deal... sure, you'll lose some resolution and I've seen the results of apple, google, samsung and the P30 ... it's the real deal and it's way more advanced than any phone on the market camera wise. From a camera on a cell phone optical zoom is a huge deal, but maybe not to you. Maybe I am more biased since the camera is high up on my list of importance.

I guess I'm not going to get into the speed and turbo boost, as ... There are 50 reviews showing the phone is faster vs 50 showing slower. So... I'll just say it's most likely on par with apples level of speed.

The point I'm trying to make is, we won't get to see this new tech ... since, this will be a version of huawei optical camara tech in and chip technology under various license agreements from the oppo, oneplus, xiaomi versions of top chinese phone makers. I guess time will tell in a few years weather we will get this type of tech here in the US.

Trump's administration hasn't actually levelled antitrust claims against Huawei. Trade secret theft and sanctions violations? You bet, and there's evidence to support those. But not antitrust -- that would require Huawei to have a dominant market position in the US, and it definitely doesn't. And we need more evidence than "Cook and Trump talked a couple times," because it doesn't mean they talked about Huawei. In fact, all indications are that they focused more on Apple itself, such as its reliance on foreign manufacturing.

You claim that no phone is perfect, but you immediately launch into a hyperbolic defense of the P30 Pro that makes false claims. Phones with optical zoom? Many of them. My iPhone XS has 2X zoom. The Galaxy S10 has 2X. The OnePlus 7 Pro has... well, technically 2.2X zoom, even though the company says 3X. Few have 10X zoom, but please don't pretend that everyone else is stuck with no zoom at all just to exaggerate the P30 Pro's abilities.

And please don't just toss out a "50 faster and 50 slower" claim and hope that I don't call your bluff. If you're going to make claims that the P30 Pro is on par with or faster than the latest iPhones, you have to provide reviews that show the P30 Pro competing well against those iPhones. No exceptions, no excuses. Here's AnandTech's own P30 Pro review showing Huawei trailing the iPhone in web speed and most graphics tests (PCMark doesn't exist on iOS, so that's the only reason it's not on those charts).

Don't get me wrong, the P30 Pro is still an exceptional phone. Its camera tech is wonderful, and better than the iPhone and other Android flagships in key aspects; its CPU performance is certainly good enough. But there are areas where it falls behind the competition, and it's really dodgy to claim that the phone is just soooooo good that the US government is blocking the entire company out of spite, especially when all evidence shows that handsets aren't the main reason.

The P30 pro doesn't need to be on a tripod to use the 50x, the combined optical and electronic stabilization is really good for handheld pics/videos even at max magnification. Whether or not its a feature that is useful for an everyday device, the quality of both the zoom and the night mode are a huge leap over the competition.
The 980 may be slower than the latest iphone but its still on par with the 855 which is still really good considering where the 970 and 960 was not too long ago.

Trump isn't sanctioning Huawei for their phones, he's ostensibly doing it for national security reasons because of the links and funding with the Chinese military. But the real reason is that Huawei is ahead of the US in 5G which is probably enough incentive for any US admin to try to rein in Huawei in order for the US to catch up.

You don't need a tripod, but it's like any long-zoom camera -- the further you zoom out, the more it exaggerates your movements and the harder it is to stay on your subject.

The Kirin 980 is a pretty competitive chip in the Android landscape, to be clear, and it's a serious improvement over the 970. My objection is the OP's false claim that it's faster than Apple's best -- it's just not. It's a classic case of an overzealous fan who needs his preferred platform to be the best at everything to feel good about his purchase, to the point where he's concocting conspiracy theories. That drives me bonkers when some Apple fans do it, too.

have you ever used one of these phones? I think not... The reviews I've read where they were shooting the moon at 50X, were done by hand, no tripod. Oh...maybe you missed the Optical image stabilization part?? Maybe you just fail to understand how seriously good this camera tech is... Yeah... destroys apple and google... as for how fast it is... who cares, it's fast enough. To even come close and passing apple in some apps is a good start.... I hate it when people say it's the best at everything. WHO??????? The screen sucks, the under glass fingerprint reader is slow... Etc...etc... Seems you just want to jump all over anyone that says it's BETTER than ANY camera phone on the market! IT IS IT IS!!! There I said it... :) Have fun!

I didn't say there wasn't OIS... you know most phones in this class have it, right? The issue isn't whether there's a steady shot, it's that 50X zoom exaggerates your movements and makes it harder to keep the intended subject framed well. That's a reality for all long-zoom cameras and telescopes, no matter how good they are. The 50X zoom is useful, just not as useful as you make it out to be.

And I have to laugh when you say "who cares" about how fast it is when you started this thread claiming that the chip in the P30 Pro "surpasses Apple's fastest." Clearly, you did care -- up until evidence showed that it's not the fastest, then speed conveniently stopped mattering. The Kirin 980 is certainly fast enough now for many tasks, but if you're a gamer or performing advanced augmented reality, the A12 will still have an edge. I'm also wondering how well the performance will age a couple of years from now with newer operating systems and apps.

The issue isn't even that you literally think it's the best at everything, it's that your self-esteem is very conspicuously wrapped up in your valuation of the phone. Yeah, the P30 Pro is a great camera phone, possibly the best on the market, but you don't have to defend it as if your life depends on whether or not I share your love for it. It's possible to be a big fan of a phone (or a console, or a car, or...) while accepting that it might not be for everyone, and that advantages on other devices matter. Fandom isn't a zero sum game where I have to lose for you to win.

Listen, no one is forcing you to buy a P30 Pro... If you don't like it, then don't buy it, and be on your way...

I'll agree to disagree with your rants here...

I do like it... or rather, I did before Trump basically made it a paperweight due to OS support restrictions.

I'm not asking you to change your preference for the P30 Pro -- I'm just asking you to make factual, evidence-supported claims and keep a level head. It's a phone, not the very fiber of your being.

Seriously guys, let's not feed the troll. I'd love to see Huawei be allowed to compete with Apple and Samsung, et al, without having to overcome govt. restrictions. Let the market shake it out.
