HTPC Setup help

I'm looking at re-purposing my old computer and setting up an HTPC for my 4 year old through HDMI to a 50inch HDTV.

It will mostly be playing stored videos, Netflix, DVD and the occasional browser session for the kids channels and things that need it like pbskids.org/nick.com/Chrome games. No standalone gaming or DVR. He's familiar with Metro-style tiles and with iOS icon grids.

I think a remote would be the best interface for him. Is there something like a wii remote that's pretty simple and keeps him from having to press a bunch of buttons or memorize commands while enabling a semblance of touch control. I also have a Kinect from an old 360. What style would be better?

The Metro interface with the live tiles would be something he's already familiar with from phones and tablets, but how suitable is it for an HTPC interface? Would it be compatible with the Kinect or wii-style remote?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
