HTPC SETUP HELP

Want to make an HTPC but I don't know what program to use for it. Can anyone help me out? I know many ATers have them so I was wondering if anyone could suggest some programs for me to use that are good. I also want to be able to record TV on to the box. If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

Depends how into it you want to get... you can output most modern video cards to a TV (they even come with the connector), costing you nothing... or you can record with a card as cheap as $40 (relies on CPU) or ~$150 (onboard chip to do the encoding)... or you can get into DVD post-processing and such (need a fast CPU, Intels better at this), HDTV recording, etc... plug your vcr, game consoles, etc into it... be more specific about exactly what you want to do and your video quality standards. Wrong forum, btw - software or video.
