HTPC Resolution Question

Okay, I've been running my HTPC for almost two years now using MediaPortal as the main app and PowerDVD for Blu-Ray.

I would like to have Windows be in 720 most of the time, then switch to 1080 when I open certain apps, such as MediaPortal or PowerDVD. Since I first got the HTPC I've wanted to do this, but I was able get most of want I needed with large icons, large skins, etc. However, there are still somethings that you can't scale up and are impossible to read from across the run at 1080.

My 301 disc CD changer just gave up the ghost, so I think I am going to rip all my CDs to the HTPC. But Winamp (and the ripping software for that matter) are both hard to read across the room. So I would like to be able to change the resolution automatically so it is easier for my wife to us and so she doesn't make me by a 6-disc changer.

OS: Windows XP Pro
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4200

Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

I know that with Windows 7 Media Center you can set a different resolution when it is running (versus your desktop).

I haven't really used the music functionality of W7 MC, so I can't really comment there.
