Here's an annoying problem that I have with one of my htpc which has a ati video card. It's a x1600pro connected to my tv with a dvi to hdmi cable. It would always loose the video signal whenever I leave it idle for awhile or when I switch video sources on the tv. I would have to either force the htpc into standby and bring it back out to regain the picture or restart it. Strangely this doesn't happen with the component outputs but the PQ isn't has good with component output.

Is this a problem with all ati cards because in my other htpc I have an nvidia 8500gt and it does not do this on the dvi output.

You have to get a DVI-detector. I know it sucks, but it's what you have to get. I got one from Gefen.

This only applies to ATI cards

It sends the monitor data to your video card at all times, meaning that when your monitor is off ie. your TV, it still thinks it is on. I had this problem with my projector and HTPC. I got it for christmas and it works great. Also, it works off DVI power so once you set it up you no longer have to send power to it.
