HTPC or directv dvr?

I have an extra computer, its a amd 64 3000+ with 512mb ram, and a nvidea 5600 video card, small hard drive but i can get a larger one.. I know its easier to run a htpc with cable television, but I have Directv.. my question is should i go the htpc route and get a tuner card, or just pay directv for a dvr? I'm sure I can get a free dvr with a contract, if i call dtv, is it possible to have a directv dvr without a phone line? and is it possible to output the dvr to a set top dvd recorder.. any wisdom appreciated greatly.. thanks.
