HTPC + full HD, something to clear up

I've been looking to get a HTPC for some time to stream the load of HD content I have on my PC (which would be more economical and convenient than getting a blue-ray burner, player and discs). At first I wanted to build one, but DIY cases all looked a little tacky, so I looked towards the mini. But it appears the Mac mini has lots of problems decoding 1080p with choppiness etc. .mkv files were pretty much random going by the discussions, with some suggesting that it streams just fine with bootcamp Windows, some suggesting the processor wasn't powerful enough, some suggesting the GMA950 wasn't powerful enough.

My question is, which is it?

My previous setup was a 3500+ Venice and 6800nu which definitely did not play H.264 content well at all, lots of choppiness and lag. However I hopped directly to a C2Q + 8800GTS, so I have no idea what exactly allows the stream to be smooth. Is decoding done completely by the processor? I'm planning to use the CCCP codec pack, basically FFDShow + Haali + MPC

mac mini isn't for 1080p decoding... any nvidia/ati video card will have hw acceleration that gma950 doesn't have

whehter 1.86ghz c2d is enough to decode- you can see cpu utilization

mkv files found on the internet are generally not bluray quality.
esp overcompressed tv shows, even 8gb bluray rips are over ocompressed.
