HTPC build, will start with AMD 2GB chip, help

I have Comaq Presario S3200NX desktop (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...product=307768) with AMD Athlon XP2400+ 2.0 GHz and 2GB of RAM gathering dust.

I want to use it and hook up with 50" Samsung HP-T5054 (50" plasma) using HDMI connection to use as a non-gaming platform (mainly to watch DVD-no blueray, and surfing the net). Which graphic card will work well? (it has built on motherboard but likely obsolite). Obviously will need HDMI connection on the card.

thanks,

gychang

I don't mean to be rude, but that machine is extremely obsolete, it might be better served as a file server or something. If you're really set on it being an HTPC then the card Lonyo suggested would make HD movies playable (I think).

He didn't say HD movies? 🙂

He said dvd's and surfing the net, NO blurays.

This is the ONLY agp card with HDMI at newegg...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125281

The PCI cards cost the same or more but were lowwer end.

At that price better to just build another system or hit eBay and hope to find a cheap one that fits what you need.
Does the built-in audio device in the 2xxx/3xxx/4xxx on AGP even function? Because on my AGP 2600Pro, the audio device is disabled in the drivers, and not supported.

I wouldn't go with an AGP HDMI solution because of that issue. In fact, I'm not even sure that there are PCI cards with HDMI output that function with audio, although I've never tried them.

I think I saw a 5450 PCI card at newegg. But it cost as much as a cheap AMD Cpu and Board.

1: MB's VGA out
2: MB's 3.5mm to 2xRCA Stereo out
3: Done

a 2400+ has more than enough juice for DVDs

thanks for the input, looks like I need to start something more "modern PC" since I am interested in getting a good picture on HDTV with HDMI.

You might want to consider something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157187 as well. Then using a DVI to HDMI connector. I would doubt you could get sound out of the hdmi though. I'm also not sure if the geforce 8200 has universal vc-1 support as far as hardware accelerated video goes.

There are also some decent atom boards with ion graphics that work really nice as hdpc's, especially in linux thanks to vdpau. these are more in the $180 range though. Most of the atom ones do have hdmi it seemed too, so thats a plus.

I know you asked for a video card, but it might be easier to just grab a modern motherboard, then you have some upgrade paths down the road should you need them. Considering the difficulty in finding agp graphic cards.

I've got an AM2 socket AMD X2 5000+ sitting around (somewhere) if you wanted to do a cheap upgrade. It's enough power to handle blu-ray decoding also (even with onboard video if you go with the ATI HD 4xxx series) if you ever wanted to go that route (I don't think your existing setup would do that, the 4800+ was the minimum CPU for blu-ray capability during the testing at the time anyhow...).

But it would involve you getting a new board/ram possibly (but that would itself fix your video problems with onboard graphics). If you want it, just let me know your address. And let me double-check to make sure I still have it before purchasing anything. I also have a few of the OEM coolers I can throw in (from hotter chips than that too, so a bit of an upgrade there... sort-of...).

Anyhow, if you're interested, let me know. PM me your mailing address and I'll dig it out of my spare parts room. It'll be shipped UPS or USPS, in OEM style packaging to protect the chip (static foam and plastic). The chip is a known good chip (but as we all know, shipping can always cause the unexpected) as it leaves my house and was my HTPC chip for not quite a year before it was retired. Never overclocked, abused, etc. I'd still be using it if I didn't get a hotter AM2+ Phenom II from another retired system.

Ohh, and no charge if you were wondering... If it works out for ya, reimburse me for the shipping after it's running if ya like.

Anyhow, you could get a board and 2-4G of ram for ~ $100 or even less if you go budget lineup. Anyhow, it's just an option you have. If you want it, just let me know. If not, that's fine too. But it would also open up the option for PCI-e video if you wanted to go even further down the road.
