HTPC build problem

I'm near the end of the build of an HTPC and I'm stuck on a problem.

I've got it hooked up to a Samsung 42" LCD 1080p. I'm running Vista Home Premium with an Asus PHC-3-100 Combo TV card. I've got the video driver set to 1080p . The standard computer system works flawlessly, I get hi-res hulu and standard-def comedy central via the net, so the connection looks good.

However, when I put a standard def DVD into either the LG GGC-H2OL or the LG GH22LP20 optical drives, the disc launch within Windows Media Center, the title and track information are listed, but I only get a black screen and, eventually, the "Not Responding" pop-up. Same result if I use Total Media 3.5 that came with the Asus.

It seems like it must be some sort of codex problem, but aren't they native to WMC and/or Total Media/

Or have I pulled a noob?

Could be a codex problem. Especially if yuor running XP since WMP on XP doesn't have DVD codex included. It may also be a problem with the optical drive.

So I loaded up the Power DVD software that came with the DVDs and, viola, I can get a very nice picture, BUT neither Microsquish Media Player not Total Media 3.5 seem to be able to use the codex.

So the good news is that the drives work, the bad news is that my Media Center controler controls pretty much nothing. Is there a way to force the WMC to use the Power DVD codex?
