HTPC and screen resolution issue

I recently put together an HTPC using an e2180 and a Gigabyte 4350 video card (other components probably don't have any effect on this issue). The computer is hooked up to my 42" panasonic 720p plasma tv in the living room via HDMI.

For some reason every time I start the HTPC the resolution is set to the lowest 640x480 and I have to adjust it manually at each boot. I've gone into the catalyst center (latest version) but don't see anything in there that would tell me I'm doing something wrong and not setting it right.

It sounds like the computer is not sensing the monitor.
You can add custom resolutions on an ATI video card, and the computer should boot with any resolution you choose that is in the registry as a standard resolution(in other words once you add the custom resolution its a standard resoluton).
Go to this link and follow the directions:

I have done this myself a few times. Occasionally I had to reboot twice for some reason for the changes to appear. If your not sure if you have the right DALNonStandardModesBCD1 don't worry about it. Add something like 1680x1049 and after reboot you should find the resolution slider will now list it as you drag the slider to the right. This way you know you have the right one.

Doing this allows me to boot my computer even with no monitor attached, and then just plug the monitor in.

EDIT: this only works on ATI cars afaik.

Thanks for the link, I'll give it a shot after work (link is blocked here).

Helps to set it to the highest setting for the TV. Even though a monitor may work at a higher setting, the TV may not be able to do that. Sometimes updating chipset drivers and/or video drivers can help.

I have an integrated Intel brand motherboard with a E7200 CPU and after I upgraded the integrated video drivers, it worked a lot better with my 40" Samsung LCD TV. I have mine hooked up with a monitor, and a TV as the second monitor. I would think that maybe a video card should have a 720p setting.

I had the opposite problem. My video runs slower than the TV.

There may be some kind of setting in the TV that lets you do a custom setting on the TV designed for the HDMI input from a computer.

My videocard does have a 720 seeing in the catalyst center, but it doesn't keep that setting when I reboot the PC.
