HTML E-Mail Question

i need to make a template for html email. i don't want to use all tables and i need to put some images in the header and footer area. is there a common width? i know there are so many variables, but it seems like a lot of people still make their sites to fit in a maximized 800 width window. is there a similiar "standard" for emails?

The ones that I did at work were about 400-500 pixels wide.
