HTML drop-down menus

I haven't the faintest clue of how to go about writing code for a dropdown HTML menu. I would consider going and stealing the code from some other site, but I prefer to be able to write and understand it myself. Does DreamweaverMX let you do this? I'm planning on writing it with PHP so I don't have to edit the actual code every time I want to add/edit something.
 
Are you talking about the drop down menu using <select> or are you talking about DHTML menu using Javascript.
