does anyone still use image mapping? working on a website in html 5 and want to do a image map with descriptions when the mouse is hovered over the icon.

it needs to work properly in all browsers.. ie, firefox, chrome, safari, opera, etc.

any recommendations on what to use ?

Hm. Last time I did image mapping was with the Colorado area codes on Wikipedia. Still seems to work, and has text pop up when the mouse hovers over different area code links. I guess you could look at the page source and figure out how it works - I don't recall! :$

Served as XHTML 1.0, not HTML 5.

@OP: If you want something supported in all browsers, then using the half-finished HTML5 standard is probably not the way to do it. But anyway, look into <map>: http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/the-map-element.html
