HTIB - which one?

Hey,

I'm interested in setting up another home theater in a medium-sized living room. I'm on a tight budget, so performance/cost ratio is especially important. I already have a DVD player (Sony NS325), a PS2 and a cable box, so I'm also interested in connecting the PS2 and cable box for DD 5.1 (optical and coax, respectively). Here are my choices:

1.) Onkyo HT-S760 ($500) - Tempting, and I've heard they sound great with both music and DVDs. Also the most expensive of the choices.

2.) Onkyo SKS-HT510 (6.1 speaker set), TX-SR501 6.1 Receiver ($450) - Its similar to the one above, except the reciever appears to only deliver 65 watts/channel, instead of 100 watts as #1 does. Unless I misread something. ;) Would 65 to each channel be enough in a medium-sized room? ( 20 x 20 maximum) I do save $50, which could go toward better cables.

3.) Samsung HT-SK5 - ($400) - Since these come with the Klipsch Quintets, the sound must be pretty darn good. The $400 price tag is before employee discount at the store that carries them, so it might come out $100-120 less... so it remains a serious possibility. Comes with 5-disc DVD player/receiver combo. The only nag is that its not a dedicated reciever, and since I can't find a single review of this set, I don't how well the reciever performs.

I'd like to know if any AT'ers have had experience with these systems, and if anyone has any other suggestions. Thanks! :)

I do have an Onkyo HT-S650 refurb that I got direct for $320 shipped which was a good deal at the time. You may want to see what shoponkyo has (create an account for a free credit and best prices) and I noticed jandr has free shipping on some kits recently as well. It is a personal preference thang whether to go for more speakers or more power for the same price but sources with additional surround channels are still rare. The 65W @ 8ohms (as Onkyo's speakers are) is surprisingly powerful, perhaps because it is relatively good quality output, but there are the 600 series receivers with 85W to consider in between. Another consideration is whether to pay for features you may not use such as component video switching which would require additional expenditure for cables if you were to use it rather than just switching "manually" on the TV and AMP, which is actually more flexible and can be automated with a decent learning remote control anyway.

Yet another good forum is avsforum.

I want to connect the DVD and the PS2 via component cables, so two component in and one out is always useful. Speaking of refurbished, how's the quality on those? I know the refurbs don't come with wires, but I figured that I'd need new cables anyway. Do the refurbs come in good enough shape?

Ah so, the TV only has one set of component inputs? Just be aware that if the receiver cannot do internal conversion all input types must match the output type which means no switching for composite or S-Video gear.

The Onkyo refurb was as-new in packaging, contents and condition -not even a scratch on it. The supplied speaker wires, as always, are only adequate. There was a known defect (bad LFE function) in a certain production run so they had many refurbs available at the time and judging by the condition I guess it is possible that the kit was never even sold to an end-user before being recalled. Results may vary, caveat emptor, etc.

I noticed that E-Cost has some refurbushed Onkyo receivers and home systems. Anyone have experience with E-Cost?

I've bought a refurbished Denon DCM-370 CD Changer from them and it works great. The system was like new and included all of the parts, cables, manual, remotes. It was double boxed as well. However I have heard horror stores from people when ordering from E-cost. I would probably buy something less than $200 from them and feel pretty safe, but I won't drop any serious money there.
