I have Tiger on my G4 (which belongs to work) I want to upgrade it to Leopard, which we have legal licenses for but we only have one Leopard DVD on hand at work. I need to copy the Leopard DVD to a dual layer DVD disc but cannot get it to work to save my life.

I went into disk utilities and made an image of it which created a .cdr file, but since the G4 doesn't have a dual layer DVD burner, I can't burn it. My Vista machines does have a dual layer burner though, so I copied the file over to that machine and then tried burning it with Alcohol 120% and Nero but both fail on the second layer every time.

Is there something else that needs to be done to get this to burn that I'm missing?

Edit: I tried the suggestions from Aphex and while I was able to make the dmg image and lock it and then copy it over to my Vista machine that has a DL burner and burned it using Alcohol 120% since it supports dmg images. The burn completed with no errors but when I put the disc into my G4 (which now has Leopard on it) it doesn't read it.

WTF is going on?

I'm at a loss.

I think I'll stop somewhere today and get some different brand of DL disc but beyond that, I'm not sure what to try.

I found this;

If you're using the "New Image" button to create the image then this is where I think you're going wrong. Don't use "New Image" to duplicate the DVD. Instead, make sure you've selected "Mac OS X Install DVD" on the left side of the Disk Utility window (the lower one is correct) and go to the menu bar in Disk Utility and from the 'File' menu choose "New -> Disk Image from disk 3s3 (Mac OS X Install DVD)?". It should be selectable if you've highlighted the disk in the Disk Utility window.

In the 'Convert Image' window give the image the same name as the Install DVD. For 'Image Format' select "read/write" (don't worry, you're not going to mount the image or write to it?the finished image just needs to be a .dmg, not a .cdr). For Encryption select "none". Save the image to someplace other than the Desktop. Since the image has the same name as the Install DVD mounted on the Desktop there is the potential for conflict if you try to save it to there. I recommend saving it to your Documents folder.

When you've finished converting the image it is very important that you DO NOT mount the image. Before you do anything else, select the image and do a 'Get Info' (Command - I) on it. In the 'Get Info' window, if the Disclosure triangle beside 'General' is not pointing down click on it to open it up and put a check mark in the box beside 'Locked'. This will lock the image and protect its' integrity (and bootability).

It is important to not 'go cheap' on the media and burn it at the slowest possible speed. My personal favourite for DVD+R DL media is Verbatim. Fuji or Sony would be my second choice. Everything else is crap IMHO.

Use Disk Utility for the burn. No Toast.

If you can, make the burn speed 2.4x. It'll take the better part of an hour to burn, but it should work.

Good Luck?

Man I need a 8GB flash drive, that'd be sweet.

Guess I have a reason to go to Frys this weekend :p

Thanks for the link, I wonder if it has to be Firewire or if USB would work.

I don't have anything that uses firewire.

USB works, but is picky about USB devices. I would google the model you are looking at to see if anyone has attempted it before purchasing.

i used mine to install Tiger back in the day, my old ipod supported firewire.

So why is it that it can't be copied?

Is it some sort of encryption on the disc?

No, i think it is the part of the process where you are sending it to Windows for the burning, that is where the foulup comes from. Tyranicus copied his Leopard install disk no problem, but he is a little hazy on the details, so perhaps asking will not be useful.

Tyranicus is another user on this forum that I happen to know in real life, it took him multiple tries to burn his Leopard disk, but he finally got it... I just don't remember the process.

How do you do this? Do you put a DMG of the install disc on the ipod?

You know, I haven't been able to successfully copy the Leopard DVD. I like to stash the original so it never gets scratched, but I could not boot off the damn copy for the life of me.

Disk utility will do it, but you will need to make an image to your hard drive first. Be sure to choose "CD/DVD Mastering" as your imaging mode.
Doing this however will not copy the Windows (i.e. boot camp) part of the disc.

OK, there may be a way to do this in Disk Utility, but I'm not really sure how. However, you can use Toast to make it an ISO (It will say .toast, but you can rename it to .iso) Then, you can burn that image with Toast or copy it over to your Vista machine and burn it from there. I have burned a Leopard ISO twice from Windows, and it worked both times.
