HTF do I learn barre chords

Hey guitar-playing Anandtechies -

Anyone recommend a good way to learn how to play barre chords? I've been told that once you can do F, you can do any barre chord, and while I can play it, i take like 4 years to get everything into position... Any tips or tricks on how to speed it up so I can actually use it in a song - ie quick transition...

I guess the question actually goes for all chords, but barre chords especially.

Thanks all.

Bar Chord, and practice makes perfect man. Just keep practicing.

I couldn't hack guitar, so I switched to bass, much easier, but then I dropped that too after about 4 years. My life started getting to busy to keep practicing.

Just like when you were first practicing switching between regular chords, just keep practicing with it. It takes a while to learn, but you'll eventually get it.

Edit-- you're basically getting your hand to get used to the position, and for it to be comfortable, just needs to do it over and over

QFT. You will not be comfortable with it overnight. Practice enough and it'll fall into place.

Yeah... it just feels like I've been working at it for so long, you know? Other chords... except d minor for some reason... came SO much more easily

It's just like playing F. Just practice different bars, majors and minors, and eventually it will feel natural. This is where proper wrist and hand position come into play, though. If you're not in the correct ergonomic position, it's harder to get a good sound.

yeah, transitioning is hard. I remember when I first had the regular chords down, and I got SOOO frustrated with barre chords. It took about 2-3 months to get the right sound and be comfortable using them while playing songs. Once you get them, they'll open up a whole new spectrum of sounds. good luck!

barre chords were a bitch to learn, no doubt about that.
especially those of us who werent gifted with large hands.

but once you learn them, theyre pie.
