The one difference will be in the chipset choice. Whereas the One (M8) ships with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC (which was that chip maker's top of the line offering in the first half of last year), the new M8s will go with a midrange Snapdragon 615 instead.

Well, at least this'll make the new m9 seem like a really big upgrade if you're unfortunate enough to buy a Snap615 based m8.

Not sure what they're thinking with this . . .ability to advertise all their shipping phones are 64 bit? Seems like it'd be better to rename this Snap615 based m8 to m8v or something to differentiate it as a slower part.

Well depending on how is priced this could make sense. Maybe they have a lot of M8 screens or bodies or whatever to clear through.

Interesting move...I would've expected that they pull an Apple, meaning: Sell the One M9 at flagship level prices ($199/2 year contract), and sell the old model (One M8) at lesser price ($99/2 year contract). They wouldn't have had to update the One M8. A reason why they could've done this is supply of the Snapdragon 801 might have been limited thus forcing them to update to a cheaper alternative.

It is a great way to move inventory without discounts. Computer OEMs have been doing this for years.

  • Old phones will now sell better due to the psychological factor this model is getting discontinued if you had personal knowledge of the situation.
  • They now have two models to sell and when you give a person limited choices but still a choice it makes it easier for them to settle on a model.
  • The carriers and such will not be tempted to give your phone away for free.

Oh good. Now the rare times when I need to compile something or render something it'll be faster due the octacore processor. Incidentally, I'm compiling Blender right now and noticed my phone is rather warm even though it's using 3 of 4 cores.

what's the thermal throttling like on the M8/M9? with that metal case they could definitely cook up a fantastic heatsink solution!!! wow that would be exciting.

I've heard the hardware throttles at 50 °C. According to CPUZ, it doesn't reach that temp, even at the reported max clock.
